Ukrainian Submarine Starts Submerged Sea Trials
Image
The "Zaporizhye" submarine of the Ukrainian Navy
Ukraine’s only submarine, the Zaporozhye, underwent first-stage sea trials including running submerged on Wednesday after undergoing a major refit, Kommersant Ukraine reported on Thursday.
The boat was submerged in the Black Sea for the first time in 18 years during the trial, Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Yury Ilyin said. The tests will continue until Friday.
Surface tests of the submarine’s power plant and other key equipment were held in April.
A Soviet-era Foxtrot class (Project 641) diesel-electric submarine, Zaporozhye was laid up at a dock in Sevastopol for years before its refit.
Russian engineers repaired and serviced the submarine and a new crew of Ukrainian submariners was trained at Russian naval bases.\
Though the submarine was built 40 years ago, it has been upgraded with new equipment.
Russia, Bulgaria, and Romania also have submarines based in the Black Sea.

Aviakon and France's Sagem to jointly modernize Ukrainian Mi-24 helicopters

Image
Konotop-based state enterprise Aviakon aircraft repair plant (Sumy region) plans in the near future jointly with French-based Sagem to start the modernization of a Mi-24 helicopter of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the plant has told Interfax-Ukraine.

The Mi-24PU1 helicopter put into service in May 2012 after the first stage of modernization with the participation of the Ukrainian defense and industrial complex has passed summer test flights and is ready for the installation of Sagem equipment.

The Ukrainian side will equip the helicopter with domestic digital sights, equipment for night use, a laser target designation system, new engines, a VHF radio unit, and a system for protection against missiles with IR guidance. The French company will install an on-board computer, multifunction displays, an optoelectronic station, an inertial-satellite navigation system, and a digital map generator.

The French equipment will be installed on the first prototype of the modernized helicopter for ground tests with the involvement of specialists from Sagem.

"The installation of modern equipment brings the upgraded Mi-24 helicopters up to NATO standards: certain units of French equipment have been successfully installed on Western models, particularly Cougar and NH90 helicopters," said the company.

The modernized Mi-24 is to be demonstrated at the 8th AVIASVIT-XXI International Aerospace Show, which opens at Kyiv-Antonov airport (Kyiv region) on September 27.

Ukraine to Scrap Ordnance for Russian Fleet
Image
Russia’s Black Sea fleet (archive)
Ukraine will scrap 3,500 tons of ordnance from Russia’s Black Sea fleet under a 2012 contract worth 235 million rubles ($7.3 million).
Ukraine will scrap the ordnance at the UOSM-DM center in Gruzevitsa, Khmelnitsky Region, the head of Ukroboronservis, Yevgeny Golubenko, is quoted as saying in Thursday’s issue of the Ukrainian journal Sevodnya.
The center has capacity to scrap up to 12,000 tons of ordnance – aerial bombs, artillery shells, rockets and other ammunition - a year, Golubenko said.
The process involves breaking down the materiel into its component parts for recycling: mainly steel, non-ferrous metals and explosives for industrial uses.
Agreement that Ukraine would carry out the work was reached at a February 27 meeting in Sevastopol between the Ukrainian and Russian defense ministers, Dmytro Salamatin and Anatoly Serdyukov.

L'Ukraine va moderniser 86 appareils de différents types de son aviation entre 2012/2017
Ukraine is planning to upgrade and repair 86 combat aircraft and helicopters in 2012-2017, says the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Lieutenant-General Yuriy Baidak.

The press service of the Defense Ministry reported on Monday that according to Baidak, 12 MiG-29s, Su-27s and L-39s had currently been upgraded, taken into service, and that they were undergoing trials in tactical aviation units.

He said that the Defense Ministry was also conducting plant repairs of Il-76MD medium-range military transport aircraft, and that the first of the upgraded aircraft could be operational by the end of the year.

Baidak said that the Il-76 would be used in the international activities of the Ukrainian Air Force at least until 2030, and that its replacement with the promising An-70 medium-range military transport aircraft would depend "solely on the economic opportunities of the state during their purchase for the needs of the Ukrainian Air Force."

In addition, as part of a program for helicopter construction in Ukraine, the Defense Ministry also plans to upgrade Mi-8 Ti and Mi-2 helicopters of the Ukrainian Air Force.

The Air Force currently has 15 flight simulators, of which four were produced in 2007-2012, he said.

Another Ukrainian Navy Battleship to Undergo Repairs at Mykolaiv

13:56 GMT, September 21, 2012 MYKOLAIV | Medium Landing Ship U401 Kirovohrad, headed by Captain 3rd rank Volodymyr Khromchenkov, arrived at Mykolaiv port. Till the end of the year the ship will undergo repairs at Chornomorskiy Sudnobudivelnyi Zavod (Black Sea Shipbuilding plant).

The enterprise will execute a number of repairing works as per the signed bilateral agreement.

Kirovohrad is the fourth national ship repaired this year at the Chornomorskiy Sudnobudivelnyi Zavod.

Vice Admiral Serhiy Yeliseev, Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, and Valeriy Kalashnikov, Director General of the Chornomorskiy Sudnobudivelnyi Zavod, visited the ship. Valeriy Kalashnikov stressed that Ukrainian military ships would by all means get repaired at the plant by the end of the year under the signed agreements.

“The dock repairs are most time and resources consuming and include repairs of the ship hull and rudder propeller unit. We use powerful 900-tons cranes for ships lifting. Appropriate financing, interoperability, and qualification of specialists will contribute to successful repairs. We’ll execute all works in time,” Valeriy Kalashnikov summarized. He added that the enterprise had almost repaired the U512 Pereyaslav scout ship.
