Ukranian Malyuk rifle Developments at ADEX 2016

Image

ADEX is the Azerbaijan International Defense Exhibition held in the capitol of Baku, Azerbaijan. Ukraine came out with the 7.62x39mm (Also 5.45×39 but not at the show) Malyuk. Essentially the rifle is an AK74 or AKM in the guise of a bullpup, much like many of the experimental bullpup conversions in the United States and Russia, but this one is actually being adopted by certain elements of the Ukrainian military.

Image

Earlier on TFB we published some information that the Malyuk was working its way through trials and prototypes. Currently it appears that a third caliber was added to the rifle (5.56x45mm), a suppressor system (two different variants), has passed military trials, and has had 200 units ordered by the Ukrainian military. In addition, full production seems to be starting, with a commercial variant that might be sold outside the Ukraine as well.

Image

It doesn’t appear that the three calibers can be converted to another, just that the rifle is made with the one. Previously it didn’t look like the Malyuk could be ambidextrous, but currently, similar to the Tavor, the charging handle can be switched to the right side if need be. It looks like the rifle is being equipped with either EoTech or Aimpoint holographic sights.

Ukraine announces plans to develop new fighter
Image
On 15 March Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko announced that the country's defence industry will develop its own twin-engine, multirole fighter. The announcement was made during Poroshenko's visit to the Ivchenko-Progress engine design bureau located in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaparozhe. This facility is also co-located with one of the largest aero-engine assembly sites in all of the former Soviet Union: the Motor Sich production plant.

Ukrainian aeronautical design teams have already produced what has been described as a "sketch outline" of a platform for a new fighter, which has been given the programme name of Legkiy Boiviy Litak, which is Ukrainian for "Lightweight Combat Aircraft" and abbreviated as LBL. The aircraft is supposed to bear a strong resemblance to the Soviet-designed Mikoyan MiG-29 in its external appearance, but the aircraft's onboard systems will be of non-Russian origin.

One of the main differences between this new Ukrainian design and the original MiG-29 will be its engines and electronics. Reports from Poroshenko's visit to the Ivchenko facility stated that the two engines would be "a design based on the AI-322F and the avionics would be of both Western and Ukrainian manufacture".

The engine design appears to be one of the main drivers for this concept, with the Ukrainian president stating, "We will soon be able to create our own aircraft engine for the fighter." Poroshenko also pointed out that Ukraine is among a small group of just five nations in the world that are capable of independently developing aero-engine designs.

Ukraine's new fighter concept was first mentioned earlier in this month in an interview with Yuri Brovchenko, Ukraine's deputy minister for economic development and trade. "On the subject of military aviation, today we are examining the possibility of developing our own indigenous fighter aircraft. There is a design team already working on this," he told the publication Ukrainski Novini.

Ukrainian MiG-29 Fighter Jet Being Upgraded With Multi-Role Capability
image.jpeg
Ukrainian Lviv Aircraft Repair Plant is upgrading the country’s MIG-29 fighter jets with air-to-ground and surface attack capability making it a multirole fighter aircraft.
The air-to-ground capability will be achieved through the use of TV-guided missile-bomb weapons of the X-29T and KAB-500KR types, a statement released to defenseworld.net from the Ukrainian enterprise said.
The MiG-29 had been originally designed as an air-superiority fighter meant to provide cover to ground attack planes such as the MiG-21.
Called the MiG-29MU2, the upgrade package includes a H-019-U2 airborne radar-assisted sighting system to allow long-range detection of air threats, weapon targeting, search and tracking of air and surface targets using the ground-map radar mode, and supporting air-to-ground and surface missions.
The upgrade also includes the installation of VOR/ILS and DME equipment to comply with the requirements for international flights.
Also included in the upgrade is domestically developed GNSS-assisted navigation capability. GNSS data will be viewed on a 8-inch, highly informative Cockpit display alongside the map of the terrain being overflown, target data, and weapons parameters.
The MiG-29MU2 fighter will also receive an audio/video recording system for post-mission debriefing and data analysis, which may later be used for documenting the mistakes made by pilots and for training new pilots.
In combat efficiency terms, the MiG-29MU2 outperforms the MiG-29 original by a factor of 1.83, this having been achieved owing to about a dozen innovation technology solutions implemented in its design.
The MiG-29MU2A upgrade is being implemented by a team of companies led by LARP, TOV Radionix and KB Luch.
By the time the system is ready for final integration, Radionix will deliver its airborne self-defense ECM and jamming system; Omut will provide protection from radar-guided AAM and SAM threats. Its range of capabilities encompasses interception and analysis of incoming signals from hostile electronic systems; decision-making on adequate countermeasure responses; and spoof jamming of hostile SAM radars and radar-guided missiles operating within its frequency range.
Pod-mounted and fuselage-buried variants of the Omut system are required to be available for the MiG-29MU2 application.
LARP is due to complete its share of work on the MiG-29MU2 program by 2019 so that the official qualification trials could be commenced the following year and the aircraft enter production by 2020.
