The future of Dutch plans to buy dozens of JSF fighter jets is in doubt on Tuesday after it emerged a majority of MPs think the agreement should be scrapped.

Labour MP Angelien Eijsink said on Tuesday her party will enter a motion in parliament to cancel the JSF jet fighter project, according to media reports..

With Labour joining in calls for the project to be cancelled, there is now a parliamentary majority going into a debate on the subject on Thursday.

Investigation

The Socialist party, anti-immigration PVV, left-wing Liberals D66 and green party GroenLinks all said earlier they want the project stopped.

The small ChristenUnie will introduce a motion for a far-reaching investigation into the cost of the project and how many jobs will lost if it is cancelled.

Replacement

The JSF was ordered to replace the aging fleet of F-16s, but the rising price of its development and construction has brought growing opposition and the final decision to purchase has been delayed by past coalitions.

The first Dutch JSF jet fighter is currently undergoing fuel system tests. A second is on order.

Eijsink, whose party agreed to support the project in 2002 following advice to then prime minister Wim Kok from four right-wing Liberal VVD ministers, said the government should cut its costs and buy something 'off the shelf'.

The estimated cost of cancelling the project is €1bn.

Defence minister Hans Hillen told nu.nl on Monday he is worried the Netherlands will miss out on important defence orders if the JSF is cancelled.

First Dutch F-35 Flies, But Nobody Notices

PARIS --- Is it because the aircraft is far stealthier than was thought, or because the Dutch government is keeping the program under the radar until after the elections now scheduled for September 12?

Whatever the reason, the first F-35A attack fighter for the Dutch air force (serial F-001) made its first flight on August 6, but no-one noticed, except for a couple of bloggers, to whom we owe the photograph accompanying this story...

Image
Dutch defence minister Hans Hillen has informed Dutch parliament on May 16th that he has ordered the Dutch MoD to initiate a possible buy of eleven additional new-built CH-47Fs in order to ensure the long term viability of the Dutch medium transport helicopter (MTH) fleet. This would effectively put an end to the planned modification of the current eleven remaining CH-47D airframes to CH-47F standard.
Image
This mid-life update programme was to start from 2016 and would allow the Dutch MTH fleet to stay in service until 2035. The acquisition of new Chinooks is considered to be a more cost efficient solution as it would provide the Dutch armed forces with an extended service life of its Chinook fleet until 2045. Ambition levels concerning the number of possible overseas operations for which MTH support needs to be be available will not have to be altered during the process. This will be achieved because the current CH-47D fleet will be retained to support ongoing operations during the phase-in of the new aircraft. The remaining Delta-models will be disposed of once all CH-47Fs have been delivered.
Image
Hillen expects the current batch of six CH-47Fs on order to enter service soon despite earlier delays which were mainly due to software problems in the avionics architecture. All seventeen Dutch F-model Chinooks will get provisions for carrying a specialised SF kit of which now an additional two will be bought to bring the total number up to six. In addition, the whole fleet will get provisions to carry Piloting-FLIR, Infra-Red Suppressor Systems and Directional Infra-Red Countermeasures (DIRCM) equipment. Current funding will allow the buy of six of these systems each.
Image
Meanwhile a Royal Netherlands Air Force AH-64D Apache conducted a series of trials onboard the Dutch Landing Platform Deck (LPD) HrMs Rotterdam on May 8th 2012. This marked the first time that an attack helicopter from the Dutch DHC landed onboard a Netherlands Royal Navy vessel.
Image
The recent NATO air campaign over Libya, Operation Unified Protector, and the subsequent deployment of French and British attack helicopters onboard coalition ships, has led the Dutch air force to investigate how the AH-64D concept of operations can be expanded to include support of littoral operations.
Image
The current series of trials focuses on the technical and logistical challenges that embarked Apaches of 301 Squadron might face during an operational deployment.

Weapons storage, refuelling procedures as well as over deck wind limitations are specific issues which need to be addressed.
Image
This new development is also evidence of a growing joint approach in the Dutch armed forces concerning rotary wing operations. Cougar aircrews from 300 Squadron are currently deployed onboard the HrMs Rotterdam in order to fill the void during transition from Lynx to NH90. The Dutch navy LPD assumed duties as flagship for the NATO led counter piracy Operation Ocean Shield on August 4th. Rotterdam carries two Cougars which provide shipborne search and rescue, medical evacuation, vertical replenishment as well as transport for boarding and search teams.

ImageImage
Scheldepoort Repair & Conversion Yard has been awarded a substantial Royal Netherlands Navy contract to modernise and upgrade the propeller shaft lines and generator sets of four Air Defence and Command Frigates.

Part of the Damen Shipyards Group, Scheldepoort is based in Vlissingen in the south of the Netherlands, and specialises in maintenance, modifications, repairs and refits. Peter Sterkenburg, Sales Manager at Scheldepoort, comments: “After an extensive negotiation period, we are very proud to have been selected for this technically challenging and complex project.”

Technology has moved on considerably since the vessels were built, some 12 years ago, by our sister company Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS), he says. “Modifying the Controllable Pitch Propeller system will make the vessels much more fuel efficient, quieter and more environmentally friendly – crucial in today’s environment. At the same time the frigates will be more powerful and the systems smaller and lighter.”

Image
Royal Netherlands Navy crews of the NH90 helicopter and HNLMS Holland Offshore Patrol Vessel conducted deck landings with winds up to Force 8 and waves up to 4 meters high last week in the North Sea.

The tests are being conducted to determine the maximum wind limit for operating the NH90 from the Holland-class OPV.

These are needed to know how far you can go during operations in bad weather said Lieutenant Commander Chris van den Berg,
