Canadian military to spend $1 billion on unmanned armed drones

Tue, 7 Aug, 2012

It appears that Canada is getting involved in the drone arms race.

According to a report in the Ottawa Citizen, the Harper government recently approved a military 'request to aerospace firms' to provide details about the types of drones now available in the marketplace.

The 'request' pointed out the need for the unmanned aircraft to operate in the Arctic. The aircraft should also be able to carry precision-guided munitions, the government said.

"This capability will allow the CF [Canadian Forces] to fill critical deficiencies," industry officials were told in the request for information sent to them July 23.

According to DND documents, the military intends to spend around $1 billion on the project.

The development and deployment of armed drones has become a sensitive subject around the world, primarily because of the way the Americans have used them for cross-border raids on Taliban and al-Qaida suspects in Pakistan. Their use has provoked concern that many civilians have been caught during these air strikes...

The development and deployment of armed drones has become a sensitive subject around the world, primarily because of the way the Americans have used them for cross-border raids on Taliban and al-Qaida suspects in Pakistan. Their use has provoked concern that many civilians have been caught during these air strikes.
In a column last month for the Financial Times, former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff argued that more drones could lead to more wars.
"Virtual technologies make it easier for democracies to wage war because they eliminate the risk of blood sacrifice that once forced democratic peoples to be prudent," Ignatieff wrote.
"Now democracies do not even have to put their pilots in harm's way. Cyberwar and drones offer Nato democracies enticing prospects of cheap, risk-free warfare — and not just democracies. A new arms race is already under way."
50 countries, including Canada, have used unarmed drones in military conflicts or for routine surveillance.
The United States was the first country to use an armed version of the unmanned aircraft during the NATO Kosovo campaign in 1999. Since then they've been used in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya and Pakistan.
In addition to Canada, Germany, Korea, Russia and China have also shown interest in developing an armed drone program.

Canada Takes Delivery of Leopard 2A4 Tanks

Fri, Sep 14, 2012 13:57 CET

The Canadian Ministry of National Defence announced today the arrival of the Leopard 2A4 Canadian tank which the government purchased from Netherlands in 2007 as part of a $650 million tank replacement project.

“Our government has a proven record of ensuring that the men and women of the Canadian Forces have the equipment they need to take on the challenges they face,” said Minister MacKay. “Our government’s procurement of this impressive platform will ensure the Canadian Forces have the capability they need to support future operations”.

A total of 42 Leopard 2A4 Canadian tanks will be delivered to the Army by the end of 2013, with the first five currently serving at the Armour School at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown. These five Leopard 2A4 Canadian tanks have already been integrated into training and are playing a key role in preparing armoured soldiers and officers for the challenges of the future.

The intensity and complexity of recent military operations in Afghanistan have shown that main battle tanks like the Leopard 2A4 Canadian tank are essential to provide soldiers with the protection, mobility and firepower that cannot be matched by light armoured vehicles.

14:51 GMT, September 14, 2012 CFB Gagetown, N.B. | The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today the arrival of the Leopard 2A4 Canadian tank as members of the Combat Training Centre’s Armour School showcased the dynamic fire-power and mobility of the latest platform of the Armoured Corps. The Government purchased the tanks from Netherlands in 2007 as part of a $650 million tank replacement project.

“Our government has a proven record of ensuring that the men and women of the Canadian Forces have the equipment they need to take on the challenges they face,” said Minister MacKay. “Our government’s procurement of this impressive platform will ensure the Canadian Forces have the capability they need to support future operations.”

The acquisition of these Leopard 2A4 Canadian tanks will allow armoured soldiers and officers to be ready to respond to the tasks assigned by the Government now and into the future. This continues to demonstrate the government’s commitment to protecting Canadian interests at home and abroad.

“The government invests in our soldiers by giving them the equipment needed to get the job done,” said Major-General Steve Bowes, Commander of Land Force Doctrine and Training System. “The Leopard 2A4 Canadian tank is a key component in the training of tank crews and the combined arms team.”

The Government of Canada honours Canadian Army regiments for service during the War of 1812

NR-12.184 - September 14, 2012

TORONTO, Ontario –The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today highlighted that numerous Canadian Forces units will be awarded perpetuation of historical units that fought in the War of 1812 and, therefore, inherit Battle Honours for engagements that were of critical importance for the defence of Canada during the War. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on September 14, 2012.

“Our Government is committed to support our men and women in uniform and to commemorate Canada’s military heritage,” said Minister MacKay. “I am pleased to be here to honour those regiments and soldiers whose decisive actions throughout the War of 1812 protected Canada and allowed our country to emerge as a free and independent nation within North America.”

As part of the commemorations of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, the federal Government committed to honouring the memory of all who served during the war. To recognize the gallantry of thousands of early Canadians who fought to defend their homeland during the war, current Canadian Army regiments that perpetuate War of 1812 units that fought in six key engagements and campaigns that were pivotal to the defence of Canada will be awarded the following Battle Honours: ‘DETROIT’, ‘QUEENSTON’, ‘MAUMEE,’ ‘NIAGARA,’ ‘CHÂTEAUGUAY,’ and ‘CRYSLER’S FARM.’

Furthermore, His Excellency The Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, has recently authorized the creation of an emblazonable Theatre Honour and a non-emlazonable Honorary Distinction, both entitled “DEFENCE OF CANADA – 1812-1815 – DÉFENSE DU CANADA”. These new unit honours will also be awarded to historical Canadian units that participated in a successful engagement in the defence of Canada. These units will, in turn, be perpetuated by current serving Canadian Army units and will therefore be able to place this Theatre Honour on their regimental colours.

Personnel from the Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment), and 7 Toronto Regiment (Royal Canadian Artillery) were present today to accept these honours, representing Ontario units that perpetuate the historical units that fought in the War of 1812. The historic ties these units share with their communities are only strengthened by this recognition.

“The War of 1812 helped to develop Canada’s military forces, and the same spirit of sacrifice and sense of duty of our military forebearers are valued in today's soldiers,” said Brigadier-General Julian Chapman, Deputy Commander of Land Force Central Area. “As we move forward, and continue to fulfill our mission to defend Canada, and North America, and to contribute to international peace and security, we carry those lessons and traditions with us.”

The War of 1812 was instrumental in the development of Canada’s military history and established the basis of the Canada we know today – an independent and free country with a constitutional monarchy and its own parliamentary system. The Government of Canada and the Canadian Forces are proud to commemorate the achievements of those early Canadian soldiers and sailors who fought in the War of 1812.

The 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 is an opportunity for all Canadians to take pride in our history and to pay tribute to our founders, defining historical moments, and the heroes who fought for Canada.

Canadian helicopter procurement plans attract interest from five firms

By: Dominic Perry London

Canada's plans to modernise its coastguard's ageing helicopter fleet have attracted the initial interest of five rotorcraft manufacturers, including the industry's four biggest airframers.

The country wants to purchase 16 light and eight medium helicopters alongside "at least one" flight simulator over the next five years.

Canadian procurement body Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) says AgustaWestland, Bell Helicopter, Eurocopter, MD Helicopters and Sikorsky had all registered their interest by the 30 August deadline.

PWGSC will now post a draft request for proposal on its electronic tendering website "once we have completed the engagement with industry and Canada has identified its requirements". The budget for the procurement is still to be finalised, it adds.

To be owned by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada department, the helicopter fleet will primarily be used for maintenance of coastguard communications systems, aids to navigation, "and other programs such as fisheries enforcement, ice reconnaissance, and environmental response, and will operate across Canada", says the department. They will also support the nation's new polar icebreaker, CCGS John G. Diefenbaker, which will enter full service in 2017.

Flightglobal's HeliCAS database lists the Canadian coastguard as operating a total of 21 rotorcraft: three Bell 206s, four Bell 212s and 14 Eurocopter BO105s with an average age of more than 30 years.

La base de Cold Lake au Canada pourrait accueillir une école internationale d'entrainement aux armements avancés pour le F-35

cela pourra se faire si toute fois le Canada achetait bien des F-35 selon une source industrielle. (Façon de faire pression :?:)
