UK May Be Looking To Return To STOVL F-35B Aircraft
Media sources are reporting that the United Kingdom might possibly be revisiting its previous decision to abandon the use of carrier-based STOVL aircraft. The United Kingdom’s opposition Labour Party reportedly delivered a letter to the Ministry of Defence questioning the governing Conservative Party’s ongoing defense review that supposedly may result in a reinstatement of budgetary request authority to procure the F-35B STOVL variant of the Joint Strike Fighter as part of the FY2012/13 budget request.

In the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), the Ministry of Defence announced its decision to abandon the F-35B STOVL in favor of the conventional carrier-launched F-35C variant for deployment as early as 2020. The SDSR stated that the F-35C variant was better suited to meet the needs of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy and would prove to be a better economic fit than the F-35B STOVL variant. At the time the SDSR was being finalized, the F-35B was at serious risk of being cancelled. That threat has since been eliminated.

Northrop Grumman completes repairs to RAF E-3D Sentry
Northrop Grumman has completed work to repair a damaged wing spar on a UK Royal Air Force Boeing E-3D Sentry airborne warning and control system aircraft.
Performed as part of the UK's Sentry whole-life support programme arrangement with Northrop, the work to repair the stress crack was undertaken at the company's Lake Charles Maintenance and Modification Center in Louisiana.

The RAF's Sentry fleet played a key role during the UK's participation in last year's NATO-led operation to protect Libyan civilians, during which it proved airborne early warning, command and control and battle management services.

Operation Joint Warrior - Pathfinders
The operation is taking place in South West Scotland between 15-21 April and focuses on a Theatre Entry operation into a notional country. The exercise will involve more than 1600 troops, and be supported by Apache, Chinook, and Royal Navy Sea King Helicopters from the Joint Helicopter Force. RAF Fast Jets and support aircraft, as well as several US and French aircraft will also support the exercise. This year the ABTF will be joined by a number of French personnel from 11 Parachute Brigade.

The Airborne Task Force (ABTF) used a combination of parachute, air assault and Tactical Air Landings (C130 Hercules) to seize and secure the airfield at West Freugh in a military exercise that involved more that 1600 troops, supported by Apache, Chinook, and RN Sea King Helicopters from the Joint Helicopter Force.

F-35 BK-1takes off on its maiden flight April 13. Photo: Lockheed Martin
BK-1, the United Kingdom’s first Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II production aircraft, flew its inaugural flight Friday. Lockheed Martin test pilot Bill Gigliotti took the short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) jet through a series of functional flight checks during a sortie that lasted 45 minutes. The jet will complete a series of company and government checkout flights prior to its acceptance by the U.K. Ministry of Defence. This BK-1 aircraft makes up one of the three F-35 fighters the MoD has already committed to buying; two F-35Bs and one F-35C.

The U.K. MOD will use this 5th Generation fighter for training and operational tests at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., beginning later this year. The British MOD is still undecided about the type of aircraft to be procured for the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier.

British Study Determines F-35C Would be More Economical Option Despite Costly Carrier Upgrade
Image
Lockheed Martin test pilot Bill Gigliotti flew the F-35 BK-1, the United Kingdom’s first F-35B Lightning II production aircraft on Friday, 13, 2012.
As Defense Update wrote before, (1, 2) the British Ministry of Defense (MOD) is evaluating two F-35 variants for its new aircraft carriers – the F-35B Short Take Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) and F-35C Carrier Variant (CV). The UK originally opted for the F-35B but under the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) MOD planned to overcome development delays and rising costs by adopting the F-35C developed for the US Navy, which was considered a more dependable long-term solution.

But it seems the downside of the STOVL means more than costs and timetable. A classified operational analysis prepared for the MOD WAS leaked by the Daily Telegraph casts shadow on the capability of the F-35B to meet the requirements set by the military with at the number of planes currently planned for procurement. The document stated that in order to fulfill the entire mission requirements set by MOD, which could be met by 97 F-35Cs, MOD will have to buy 136 F-35B STOVL ‘jump jets’, at an extra cost of £2.4 billion.
