India's acquisition of 100 K9 SPHs approved
Image
India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the INR42 billion (USD646 million) procurement of 100 modified South Korean Hanwa Techwin K9 Vajra-T 155 mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) for the Indian Army on 29 March.

Officials said the contract for the K9 Vajra (Thunderbolt) SPHs to be built by Techwin's joint venture (JV) with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at the latter's Telegaon plant near Pune, western India, was to be signed by 31 March: the close of financial year 2016-17.

The SPHs are being procured under the 'Buy Global' category of India's Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) and will comprise 50% indigenous content. This will enable the JV to bypass the mandatory 30% offset investment of the overall contract value into India's defence, internal security, or civil aviation sectors.

Locally developed components will include 14 subsystems, such as the fire control and communication suites, in addition to India indigenously fabricating and machining the K9's hull and turret structure.

The K9 is powered by a German 1,000 hp MTU MT 881 Ka-500 V8 water-cooled diesel engine and driven by a fully automatic US-origin Allison transmission. Operated by a five-man crew, the 47-tonne SPH is capable of firing assorted projectiles to ranges between 18 and 42 km.

The K9's hydro-suspension and high ground clearance ensure mobility across varied terrain.

Constructed of all-welded steel armour and capable of withstanding 14.5 mm armour-piercing shells and 152 mm rounds, the K9's design incorporates an automatic fire control and loading system, a modular azimuth position system, and a powered gun elevation and turret traverse system.

Industry officials said the K9 tender would be the biggest signed with India's private sector for a large military platform and includes the option for an additional 50 guns.

The SPHs' supplementary K10 munitions supply vehicle, built on the K9 platform, is not part of the tender, industry sources have said.

Lockheed signs pact with Tata to make F-16 planes in India

In announcing their agreement at the Paris Airshow, Lockheed and Tata said moving the production base to India would still retain jobs in the US.

Weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, U.S. aircraft major Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) signed an agreement to make the F-16 Block 70 fighter aircraft in India to meet the IAF’s single-engine jet requirement.

The IAF is about to initiate the process for selection of a single-engine fighter aircraft to replace the Russian MiGs under the Strategic Partnership model of the Defence Procurement Procedure. The announcement from Paris Air Show, where among those present was Ratan Tata, came ahead of Mr. Modi’s meeting with Trump later this month.

“This agreement builds on the already established joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Tata and underscores the relationship and commitment between the two companies,” said N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons.

The Strategic Partnership model has four segments — submarines, single-engine fighter aircraft, helicopters and armoured carriers/main battle tanks — and specifically intends to open up defence manufacturing to the private sector. The deal for 100- plus fighter aircraft is estimated to be worth over ₹60,000 crore.

The contenders for the deal are F-16 of Lockheed Martin and Gripen of SAAB. The likely Indian private sector players in the race are TASL and Mahindra group, both of which have a footprint in the aerospace sector.

The statement also said F-16 production in India would support thousands of Lockheed Martin and F-16 supplier jobs in the U.S., create new manufacturing jobs in India, and position Indian industry at the centre of the most extensive fighter aircraft supply ecosystem in the world.

While Mr. Modi has put forward the ‘Make in India’ initiative to develop the manufacturing sector in India, Mr. Trump has given a call, ‘America First,’ to get jobs back to the U.S.

TASAL has an existing partnership with Lockheed under which it manufactures airframe components for the C-130J airlifter and the S-92 helicopter.

Indian Troops Get Combat Helmets For the First Time in Decades
Deprived of basic safety equipment like bulletproof gear, Indian Army has finally received 7,500 helmets after losing hundreds of soldiers in close encounters with terrorists and rival troops in recent decades.

New Delhi (Sputnik) – In total, the Indian Army ordered 158,279 helmets under fast-track purchase plan. The second batch of 30,000 helmets is expected to arrive by the end of this year, and the rest will be delivered by mid-2019. However, the 1.3 million-strong Indian Army needs more than 300,000 such helmets for its infantry.

The ballistic helmet is capable of stopping 9mm bullets from a 20-meter range. Up to 50,000 lightweight helmets will also be equipped with latest communication headsets. Ballistic helmets found the topmost mention for military purchase during the first press conference of newly appointed Army Chief General Bipin Rawat.

"Several casualties take place because of bullet injuries. We are looking at ballistic helmets. Today we are using patkas, which only protects one's forehead," Rawat had said earlier this year.

Indian soldiers are fighting close-range fights with terrorists and militants without basic safety equipment. Indian paramilitary forces have a 98% shortage of ballistic helmets. The Central Reserve Police Force, which is deployed in Kashmir, has more than 350,000 troops but they have only 1,853 pieces of bulletproof headgear.

In 2016, the Army had procured 50,000 bullet-proof jackets through revenue route, with 186,138 more vests expected to be delivered very soon.

India's nuclear-powered submarine damaged in accident, says report

The Indian Navy’s (IN’s) only nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) has been damaged in an accident and could require “substantial repair work” to render it operational again, The Print news website reported on 3 October.

The outlet quoted unnamed sources as saying the sonar dome of INS Chakra was damaged due to either a collision at sea or accidental scraping while entering the narrow channel into the naval base at Vishakhapatnam.

StratPost | Walkaround the Indian Navy MIG 29K
https://youtu.be/NhN7_L3R6uU
Mig-29k has gotten damn good manoeuvrability, for all those who say this aircraft is obsolete, no aircraft in Pakistani arsenal can match up with the Mig-29K, let alone the avionics are far better than the F-16s flown by the PAF, the best that they have.

Tres bonne description du MIG-29K par le pilote
