ASELSAN AWARDED URUGUAYAN CONTRACT

Turkey's Military Electronic Industry ASELSAN for short has been awarded the contract by the Uruguayan government.

Uruguay has opted for ASELSAN for the first phase of the project to protect all its land and sea borders. A statement made by ASELSAN says that the $ 3,7 million contract with Uruguay involves the integration into tactical wheeled vehicles of an ASELSAN-made electro-optical package consisting of a reconnaissance-monitoring device, thermal camera, day vision camera, and a laser distance measuring tool.

The statement says further that the electro-optic elements to be used in the border security system will give the operator the opportunity to monitor the environment day and night regardless of what the weather conditions may be. The Uruguayan army plans to prevent smuggling and illegal activities on the borders, the biggest problem in the region, with the ASELSAN project.

Uruguay Army selects Turkish tactical radars

The Uruguayan Army has selected Turkish company Aselsan for its mobile surveillance system requirement and signed an order for five systems in early October, IHS Jane's has learned from sources in Montevideo.

Each system comprises an Aselsan electro-optical sensor and an Advanced Capability Aselsan Radar (ACAR) ground surveillance radar mounted in a telescopic mast on a Land Rover Defender. The ACAR has a maximum range of up to 60 km and can detect pedestrians at ranges up to 12 km.

IHS Jane's understands that the new surveillance systems will replace the existing Thales 3190B RASIT radars in service with the Uruguayan Army.
