Military plane crashes after hitting another at Mexico Aerospace Fair

Image
Two Mexican air force planes collided Saturday during an air show at Mexico's Aerospace Fair 2015 in the central state of Mexico, causing one of the planes to crash but without anyone being hurt.

The accident took place at 11:05 a.m. and caused no injuries because those on the plane were able to eject before the crash, the National Defense Secretariat, or Sedena, said in a communique.

"The crew of pilot and copilot were not hurt but are undergoing general medical exams to make sure they have no injuries," Sedena said.

The two planes were Beechcraft T-6C Texan II military trainers that were engaged in aerial acrobatics as one of the closing acts of the Mexico's Aerospace Fair 2015, which was being held in its first year at the Santa Lucia military air base and was inaugurated last April 22 by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

The president noted the importance of the event for positioning "Mexico as one of the most attractive poles of the aerospace industry in the world."

Though why the accident happened remains unknown, witnesses at the event say it could have been brought about by a slight scrape of the two planes, local media reported.

"When coming out of a double-mirror maneuver, one of the planes went out of control," according to Sedena, which called for the Aerial Accidents Investigation and Judgment Commission for an in-depth study of what caused the crash.

The plane went down very near the military base, it said.

The air show had an audience of close to 200,000 people, of whom none were injured, local media said.

When the plane hit the ground it broke into flames and sent up a column of smoke; the fire was soon extinguished by the firefighters corps.

These military training aircraft are made in the U.S. and Sedena uses them to teach pilots to make short flyovers providing air support for military action on the ground. EFE

17 dead in ANA helicopter crash in Zabul

Image
At least 17 persons were killed when a helicopter of Afghan National Army (ANA) crashed in the Naw Bahar district of southern Zabul province, an official said Thursday.

Pamiri, the spokesman of the 205th Thunder Military Corps, in Zabul province told Pajhwok Afghan News the helicopter came down in a mountainous area between Nawbahar and Shinki districts at around 11: 00 am.

He said reinforcement had been dispatched to the area. However, an official in southern Kandahar province wishing anonymity confirmed that 12 ANA soldiers and five technical personnel including pilots were killed in the incident.

He said that two ANA helicopters were on way to Naw Bahar district but one of them crashed due to technical problems.

“The pilot of the second helicopter told me that the pilot of the crashed helicopter had told him about emergency landing due to a technical fault, but the helicopter crashed down within few minutes,” the official said.

The helicopters were boarded with senior ANA officials and were traveling to Naw Bahar district, the official said.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed hitting the helicopter in which 25 onboard had been killed.

Bahrain F-16 crashes in Saudi

RIYADH, Dec 30, (AFP): A Bahraini fighter jet taking part in the Saudi-led coalition battling rebel forces in Yemen crashed Wednesday in Saudi Arabia due to a “technical error,” the alliance said. The F-16 jet crashed in the kingdom’s southwestern Jazan region near the border with Yemen, the coalition said in a statement on the official SPA news agency. Bahrain’s military confirmed that the jet crashed “while carrying out its national duty in defending the southern borders” of Saudi Arabia.

The pilot was “saved and is in good health,” it said, adding that the plane’s wreckage had been found and that an investigation had been launched. The crash comes a day after Bahrain said that three of its soldiers had died “in an incident” along the Saudi border with Yemen. It did not say how or when they had died.

The rebel sabanews.net website said meanwhile that insurgents fired a “ballistic missile” early Wednesday on the southern Saudi port of Jizan, which they claimed “precisely hit its target.” But the coalition said that Saudi Arabia’s defence forces safely intercepted the missile, destroying the warhead as well as its launcher in Yemen according to a statement on SPA. The rebels have intensified rocket attacks across the Saudi border during the past week, prompting the coalition to threaten severe reprisals. The United Nations estimates that nearly 6,000 people have been killed in fighting across impoverished Yemen since March, roughly half of them civilians.

Months of UN-brokered mediation efforts have failed to bear fruit, with the latest round of peace talks earlier this month ending without solution. Rebels and government loyalists accused one another of repeatedly violating a week-long ceasefire designed to coincide with negotiations. Jihadist groups have exploited the chaos to make sweeping gains, and the UN has warned that 80 percent of Yemenis are on the brink of famine.

The Saudi coalition began bombing raids in March on Iran-backed Houthi rebels who had seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and forced the internationally recognised government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee.

It has supported forces loyal to Hadi with air strikes, ground troops, and weaponry, in addition to training. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which play key roles in the coalition, have suffered the alliance’s heaviest losses. Eight Bahraini soldiers and one Qatari have also died. Sudan has deployed troops in Yemen while Kuwaiti media reported this week that the emirate has decided to send ground forces.

The Bahraini jet is the second coalition F-16 to crash after a Moroccan plane went down during a mission over Yemen in May. Its pilot was later found dead and his body was returned home. The coalition said that crash had been caused by a technical fault or human error, and it denied rebel claims that they downed the plane. Saudi has deployed Patriot missile batteries after more than 80 people, including civilians, have died on its southern front with Yemen since March.

Two UAE pilots killed as fighter jet crashes in Yemen

Saudi-led coalition fighting rebels backed by Iran says Mirage aircraft crashed due to technical fault as warplanes turn on Aden

Two Emirati pilots have been killed after their fighter jet crashed in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is battling rebels backed by Iran.

The Mirage aircraft crashed at dawn “due to a technical fault”, said a coalition statement published hours after the United Arab Emirates reported one of its jets missing without giving details.

It is the first known case of an Emirati jet from the coalition crashing since the campaign against the rebels began last March.

Coalition warplanes turned their attention towards Yemen’s second city, Aden – home to a growing jihadi presence – for the first time last week.

Security officials and witnesses in Aden told AFP that a jet had crashed into a nearby mountain on Monday as aircraft operated in the vicinity, after clashes erupted between Yemeni forces and jihadis.

Islamic State and al-Qaida have taken advantage of the conflict between insurgents and pro-government forces to reinforce their presence in the south, including in Aden.

A government official told AFP that a coalition jet had carried out an air raid against the home of a local Isis commander at dawn, killing the target’s 18-year-old son, near the plane crash site.

Apache helicopters were also taking part in the fighting on Monday, security officials said.

“We saw Apache helicopters fire rockets and open machine gun fire at al-Qaida militants” in the al-Mansoura district of Aden, one witness said.

Security sources estimate that about 300 heavily armed al-Qaida fighters are entrenched in al-Mansoura.

The UAE jet is the third coalition warplane to go down since last March. In December a Bahraini F-16 crashed in Saudi Arabia due to a “technical error”. The pilot was saved and the plane’s wreckage was found.

In May a Moroccan jet crashed in Yemen. Its pilot was later found dead and his body was returned home. The coalition said at the time that the crash had been caused by a technical fault or human error, and denied rebel claims that they had downed the plane.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which play key roles in the coalition, have suffered the alliance’s heaviest losses in Yemen, with dozens of soldiers killed.

In Yemen itself, more than 6,100 people have died, half of them civilians, since the coalition launched its campaign, according to the United Nations.
