FARNBOROUGH: Saab pushes ahead with Gripen E development

16 JULY, 2018 SOURCE: FLIGHTGLOBAL.COM BY: GREG WALDRON FARNBOROUGH
Saab is confident that the second and third test examples of its Gripen E will fly soon, as it continues development work with the first aircraft.

The second and third test jets, designated 39-9 and 39-10, will “fly soon,” says Jonas Hjelm, senior vice president and head of aeronautics at the Swedish manufacturer. While they won’t join the test programme at exactly the same time, at this time in 2019 they will both be part of it, he says.

Meanwhile, Saab’s first test aircraft, 39-8, has flown with newly-added external stores: five pylons produced by Ruag, as well as two IRIS-T air-to-air missiles on its wingtip stations. The Gripen E first flew in June 2017.

“Gripen flew as expected and we are very pleased with the flight test results,” says Hjelm. “During the flight, the aircraft carried out a number of actions to verify the flying and handling qualities of the aircraft with this extended configuration.”

The company says that each Gripen E comes with eight pylons. These can be used for fuel, sensors, or weapons.

Hjelm adds that the emphasis with 39-8’s flight testing has been on the Gripen E’s handling characteristics. As new jets enter the testing programme, additional systems, such as electronic warfare, radar, and a Link 16 datalink will be introduced.

Hjelm however did not say when the two-seat Gripen F, which is part of Brazil’s order for 36 Gripens, will conduct its first flight.

He stressed that the advent of the single-seat Gripen E and two-seat Gripen F does not mean that the existing Gripen C and D have reached the end of their lives, and the original version of the fighter still possess a substantial growth path. Indeed, the development of the more advanced variant feeds continued work on C and D platform, he says.

When asked about Saab’s view on so-called sixth generation fighter programmes, which are likely to see cross border efforts to develop advanced fighters or unmanned combat vehicles, Hjelm said that Saab is already deep into futuristic work with the Gripen E development.

“We are willing to talk to everyone in Europe and even outside about next generation fighters. Gripen E will be part of that discussion.”

He adds that the industry’s conversations about UCAVs have subsided somewhat in recent years, mainly because of philosophical concerns about unmanned systems. Longer term, he expects interest in this area to grow again, but with a greater emphasis on optionally manned platforms.https://www.flightglobal.com/news/artic ... lo-450275/

Saab's Gripen E programme continues to make progress. The Gripen aircraft with designation 39-8 has conducted a number of successful flights carrying external stores, including pylons from the Swiss company RUAG Aerostructures.

Since the first flight with the Gripen E test aircraft (39-8) last year, an intensive flight trials period has been successfully conducted. The aircraft has shown throughout the expansion of the envelope expected performance and behaviors, with high availability and reliability. Gripen has now taken another big step towards customer delivery next year by flying with external stores.

"Gripen flew as expected and we are very pleased with the flight test results. During the flight, the aircraft carried out a number of actions to verify the flying and handling qualities of the aircraft with this extended configuration", says Jonas Hjelm, Senior Vice President and head of Saab business area Aeronautics.

Gripen E's pylons are installations by which additional tanks for fuel, surveillance systems or guided weapons can be attached under the aircraft. Eight pylons are supplied per aircraft. These technologically sophisticated components include both electronic as well as mechanical systems and must meet the highest demands regarding aerodynamics and load capacity.

The first flights with external stores were conducted over the Baltic Sea at the beginning of July. Besides two of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile, the aircraft carried five pylons designed and built together with the Swiss company RUAG Aerostructures.

"I am glad to follow the continued success of the Gripen E programme. RUAG Aerostructures is proud of the broad and long-term partnership with Saab", says Dirk Prehn, CEO of RUAG Aerostructures and emphasising the importance of the business relationship between RUAG and SAAB. "As a major supplier in the Gripen programme, responsible for the design and manufacture of the pylons and other components, we contribute to the superior performance of the fighter, meeting all requirements in terms of safety, performance, life cycle cost and quality", concludes Dirk Prehn.http://www.4-traders.com/SAAB-AB-649162 ... -26933207/

Farnborough 2018: Saab open to fighter partnership, if Gripen E tech included
Gareth Jennings, Farnborough - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
16 July 2018

The United Kingdom is one of a number of nations exploring ‘sixth-generation’ fighter concepts. Saab says it is open to any teaming arrangement, but insists that its Gripen E technology features in the development. Source: IHS Markit/Gareth Jennings
Saab is open to collaboration on any future fighter project so long as a place can be found for the aircraft technology that the company is currently developing, a senior official said on 16 July.

Speaking on the opening day of the Farnborough Airshow, the head of Aeronautics, Jonas Hjelm, said that Saab has yet to decide which of the numerous ‘sixth-generation’ platforms that have recently been announced would be best suited to the Swedish company’s requirements, and that all possibilities remain open so long as its Gripen E technology features in any development path.

We are talking to everyone at the moment, and we are open to working with everyone,” Hjelm said, adding, “We are already developing the next-generation fighter with our Gripen E, and so we would need ‘E’ technology included in any partnership in which we are involved.”

Hjelm’s clarification of Saab’s position came days after it was reported by the Financial Times that the company was looking to team with the United Kingdom, which is currently looking at its future fighter options via a Team Tempest working group that comprises the Ministry of Defence (MoD), BAE Systems, Leonardo, Rolls-Royce, and MBDA. However, this report followed comments made at the ILA Berlin Airshow in April by Saab CEO Håkan Buskhe, who said that he is considering the company’s options in relation to the Franco–German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme.

Besides the United Kingdom and the Franco–German collaboration, Spain is known to have its own FCAS requirement, although, given that country’s ties to Airbus, it is likely that it will opt into the effort that the German branch of Airbus recently launched in partnership with France’s Dassault.

27 NOVEMBER 2018 NEWS
Saab completes first flight of second Gripen E test aircraft
SHARE
Saab has concluded the maiden flight of the second Gripen E multirole fighter test aircraft, designated 39-9.

The 33-minute test flight was carried out by Saab experimental test pilot Robin Nordlander from the company’s airfield at Linköping in Sweden.

Nordlander said: “Flying Gripen E means breaking no sweat though, even on a maiden flight such as this. The flight was so smooth and 39-9 a real pleasure to pilot. I am looking forward to getting it back in the air again and soon putting the new systems to the test.”

During the trial, the test pilot carried out a number of operations in order to prove and demonstrate flight characteristics and various test criteria such as the software, life support system and radio system.

Saab Aeronautics Business Area Jonas Hjelm said: “It is very satisfying to see the second Gripen E aircraft join the flight test programme as planned.

“In the next phase of the 39-9 Gripen E test programme, the company will test and validate the tactical systems and sensors integrated on to the fighter aircraft.”
“This new aircraft allows us to expand the trial activities as we test more functionality with on-board systems whilst, with two aircraft now flying, we are increasing the overall pace of testing.

“The programme continues to deliver good progress and to generate interest as our customers and others are keen to see and learn more about the capabilities Gripen E is going to give their pilots.”

In the next phase of the 39-9 Gripen E test programme, the company will test and validate the tactical systems and sensors integrated on to the fighter aircraft.

As an upgraded variant of Saab’s Gripen C/D multirole combat aircraft, Gripen E has been designed to replace the Swiss Air Force’s existing fleet of Northrop-built F-5E/F Tiger jets.

The aircraft has an overall length of 15.2m, wingspan of 8.6m, and maximum take-off weight of 16,500kg.

Earlier this month, Saab’s first Gripen E test aircraft, designated 39-8, completed a test flight with two MBDA-built Meteor active radar-guided beyond visual range air-to-air missiles.https://www.airforce-technology.com/new ... -aircraft/

Relie au radar SAAB/(Gripen):
https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news ... -gan-radar
Meanwhile, Saab has been contracted by the U.S. government to supply an X-band AESA fighter radar for evaluation as part of the Foreign Comparative Test (FCT) program. The radar incorporates GaN (gallium nitride) semiconductor technology in its transmit/receive modules. Compared with the GaAs (gallium arsenide) semiconductor used in most current “e-scan” radar arrays, GaN permits more power to be transmitted through the array while generating less heat.
https://defenceupdate.in/saab-offers-cu ... ts-gripen/
Sweden and Saab have offered to co-develop its Gallium Nitride AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar with India. In meetings held with a visiting Indian defense ministry committee this week, which included Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha — and following on from briefings in New Delhi last month — Saab officials have pitched the idea of joint development of the technology to India, if India were to select the Gripen for production in India, via Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India initiative
US to evaluate Saab GaN-based active aperture radar under FCT
Richard Scott, London - Jane's International Defence Review
12 October 2018

Saab is to supply a prototype gallium nitride (GaN)-based X-band Active Aperture radar unit to the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) for evaluation under the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Foreign Comparative Test (FCT) programme.

US Naval Air Systems Command's Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst awarded Saab Defence and Security USA a USD8.2 million contract for the effort on 27 September. The contract, expected to last up to 30 months, could increase to USD13.5 million if all options are exercised. Work will be performed in Gothenburg, Sweden (80%), and East Syracuse, New York (20%).
