Gripen fires IRIS-T air-to-air missile
The Saab Gripen new generation fighter has successfully test fired a fully functional, guided version of the advanced IR air-to-air missile IRIS-T for the first time. An important milestone in the integration of IRIS-T with the Gripen fighter, was achieved on 8 November 2007 at the Vidsel range in northern Sweden when Gripen fired the IRIS-T, within visual range (WVR), missile with an operational target seeker for the first time. It was a high g-load test firing using a fully operational missile without a warhead. The test was completely successful with the missile finding and shooting down the designated target.
With IRIS-T, the Gripen’s close combat capacity is greatly increased, a significant factor in international operations. The missile is being developed to combat targets at short range and is also designed to strike targets behind the firing aircraft.
IRIS-T will enter service alongside the Cobra HMD (Helmet Mounted Display) System, giving the SAF Gripens a formidable new combat edge. International prestige project Development and production of IRIS-T is being carried out in a European collaborative project involving six different countries; Sweden, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway and Spain. The industrial consortium is led by Diehl BGT Defence from Germany, and Sweden is participating through Saab Bofors Dynamics, which is responsible for the Aircraft Interface Unit (internal and external wiring and communication) and Signal Processing Unit (missile computer) and accompanying image and signal handling. IRIS-T will initially arm Gripen, Eurofighter, F-16, F-18 and Tornado aircraft and will eventually replace the US-produced Sidewinder missile. Saab’s task of integrating the IRIS-T into the Gripen fighter came from a Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) contract awarded at the end of 2005. The first test firing under the framework of the order, a ballistic non-guided firing, took place in June 2007. This latest firing was the next step in the integration programme, which will continue during 2008 with more test firings from other weapon stations on the Gripen fighter.

Defence and security company Saab has started the assembly of the next generation Gripen, the Gripen E. First to be constructed is the front fuselage of the first pre-production test aircraft 39-8.
Following a short and intense period of design using the latest tools and methods, through so called ‘Model Based Design’, the construction of the Gripen E begins with the manufacturing and assembly of all parts of the fuselage; the largest and most time consuming part of the airframe. These parts will then be joined together and assembled into a complete airframe. This is followed by an intensive construction period to install cables, mount systems, the outer shell and other equipment. More than 1,000 people at Saab are now working solely with the development and production of the Gripen E.
“What we are experiencing now is a leap in technology for Saab and the global aeronautical industry as we can see the latest and most modern fighter being constructed using the latest processes, methods and tools. This allows us to bring forward an even more capable fighter at an even more favourable life cycle cost,” says Lennart Sindahl, Head of Business Area Aeronautics at Saab. “Following years of R&D investments in aeronautical design, we can offer unique opportunities for transfer of knowledge and technology by inviting customer countries’ industries into the work on Gripen E. The Gripen E programme will also continue to drive technological development as well as the creation of jobs, both in Sweden and in other countries.”
Based on the design of previous versions of the Gripen system, the Gripen E offers a next generation sensor suite, new communication links, revolutionary avionics architecture, more thrust, increased flight time, more weapon stations and load capability, a fully digital cockpit including HUD (Head-Up Display) and a brand new electronic warfare system.
The test aircraft 39-8 will be the first complete pre-production version of the Gripen E and will be used to demonstrate new features and capabilites. The technological leaps in the Gripen E have been proven in the Gripen demonstrator programme with the Gripen E/F demo aircraft that has flown over 250 hours in countries such as Sweden, the UK, India and Switzerland (in Emmen in October 2012, January and April 2013) since 2008.
On February 15, Saab signed an agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) regarding development and modification of 60 Gripen E for Sweden during the period 2013-2026 as well as a possible order for new production of Gripen E for Switzerland.

La nouvelle est importante, l’avionneur Saab et l’équipementier Selex ES vont collaborer sur le programme de leurres actifs de nouvelle génération Expendable Decoy Active (EAD). Ce nouveau type de leurres équipera le Gripen E.
Selex ES BriteCloud :
Dévoilé par Selex ES, le nouveau leurre actif anti-missiles de nouvelle génération pourra être largué depuis les distributeurs de fusées «Flares» 55mm standards qui équipe les aéronefs actuellement. Le «BriteCloud» est un leurres d’un nouveau genre qui va permettre de leurrer les missiles semi-actifs adverses et les radars de conduite de tir loin des avions de combat.
Le «BriteCloud» est le successeur technologique des générations précédentes de leurres RF, tels que les répéteurs et les leurres remorqués radar (TRD). Une fois largué, le «BriteCloud» recherche les menacent prioritaires en utilisant la technologie de mémoire numérique autonome (DRFM). Les impulsions radar sont captées dans l'ordinateur de bord du «BriteCloud», puis copiées en utilisant les fréquences de répétitions pour ensuite simuler une «fausse cible». Cette fausse cible, si convaincante que le système de menace ne peut pas détecter la supercherie. Le «BriteCloud» pourra séduire même les menaces les plus modernes loin de la plate-forme de tir.
Doté de petites ailettes, le «BriteCloud» s’éloignera du Gripen E pour écarter la menace, minimiser les détonations de proximités et provoquer sa destruction à l’écart en toute sécurité.
Partenariat Saab & Selex :
L’avionneur suédois Saab renforce un peu plus sa collaboration avec l’équipementier Selex ES, qui fournit déjà l’antenne AESA du radar du Gripen E, ainsi que le système IRST Skyward G. Les essais en vol du «BriteCloud» débuteront l’année prochaine déjà sur un avion de la famille Gripen, puis il sera testé sur les Gripen E de prés-séries, pour une intégration finale sur les avions destinés à la Suède et la Suisse en 2018.
Compléter efficacement la protection des Gripen E :
Le Gripen E dispose déjà d’un équipement de guerre électronique de nouvelle génération qui s’articule autour des systèmes EW System MAW300 de type électro-optique qui fonctionne avec les lances-leurres Saab BOH/BOL de dernière génération (ADIS). L’arrivée de ce nouveau leurre complétera de manière particulièrement efficiente la protection de l’avion face à l’évolution des menaces.
