AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, and Exclases Holdings Ltd. are pleased to announce that three AW139 helicopters will be introduced into service in Russia to perform special security missions. These aircraft, which will be operated by a Government Agency to enhance security, are scheduled to enter operational service in 2013.

This order marks the entrance of the AW139 into the Russian parapublic helicopter market, further expanding the rapid success of this model across the nation where it has been chosen for VIP/corporate transport, passenger transport and utility missions.

The AW139 is already carrying out homeland security, law enforcement, coast guard and public utility roles in a large number of countries in Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa and North America.

The AW139, thanks to its outstanding features, has been identified and selected by Russian industry as the benchmark helicopter in the light medium weight category to meet a wide range of civil requirements. Due to its unmatched capabilities to operate in adverse weather conditions, the AW139 is perfectly suited not only for VIP/corporate transport purposes in Russia but also to meet the requirements of the parapublic market.

Almost 170 customers from more than 50 countries have ordered nearly 640 AW139 helicopters to perform a wide range of roles including law enforcement, homeland security, border/coast guard duties, emergency medical services, fire fighting, search and rescue, VIP/corporate transport, offshore transport and passenger shuttle services.

A civil AW139 assembly line in Tomilino, near Moscow, has just started operations. The plant is run by HeliVert, a Joint Venture company established by Russian Helicopters (a subsidiary of JSC UIC Oboronprom, part of Russian Technologies State Corporation) and AgustaWestland. The plant will have the capacity to assemble up to 20 helicopters per year, with production set to start in the coming months and progressively increasing to a steady state regime by 2015. The facility will employ over 100 people by 2015 when full production is established. The plant will meet the growing demand for the AW139 helicopters in both Russian and CIS civil markets.

AgustaWestland presente le AW189 SAR à Farnborough

Image
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is exhibiting the new generation AW189 8-tonne class helicopter in a search and rescue configuration for the first time ever at the Farnborough International Airshow. Launched in June 2011, the AW189 is designed to meet future demanding requirements for long range, long endurance SAR operations in all weather conditions and operating environments. Meeting the latest safety and certification requirements and equipped with advanced avionics and mission systems, the AW189 offers unmatched capabilities in its class and is being offered for the UK’s SAR-H requirement. Certification of the AW189 is on schedule for 2013.

The AW189 SAR is the advanced UK solution to meet the UK’s SAR-H requirement with second to none operational and industrial benefits for Britain. A British solution for a British requirement.

Should the AW189 be selected for the UK SAR-H requirement, all SAR-configured AW189s will be assembled at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil factory, not just those for SAR-H, but all AW189s sold worldwide. This would create and sustain several hundred long term highly skilled jobs in the UK. Also as the AW189 moves into production many opportunities will be created within the UK supply chain for sub-systems, parts and equipment, potentially sustaining up to 1000 jobs over the 20 plus year production programme. There would also be UK aircraft support and training centres for SAR-H, keeping jobs and skills in the UK throughout the life of the aircraft.

AgustaWestland has been providing helicopters and supporting them to keep Britain’s seas, shores and mountains safe since 1955. Following the Whirlwind, Wessex and Sea King the AW189 is the next generation helicopter with the capability to deliver the best lifesaving capability overland, offshore and around the coastline of the UK.

The AW189 has a large 11.2 cu m cabin with a further 2.4 cu m storage space available for equipment. Large sliding cabin doors make the loading of survivors easy both on the ground and when using the rescue hoist installation. Other equipment fitted to the AW189 includes life rafts, emergency floats, Health and Usage Monitoring System, Flight Data Monitoring, dual rescue hoist, ice protection system and a range of advanced avionics systems.

The AW189 uses cutting edge technology including the latest lightweight composite materials to provide greater speed, range and whilst meeting the latest safety standards. Its SAR capability has been developed from that of the AW139 currently in UK commercial SAR service. With green technology reducing its carbon footprint, fuel consumption and noise, the AW189 is the most efficient and environmentally responsible helicopter in its class.

AgustaWestland’s Yeovil facility has already been playing an important role in the design and development of the AW189. Activities undertaken preliminary design of the overall architecture; design and development of dynamic components and vibration analysis. Manufacturing activities for the development aircraft have included critical components such as rotor blades, gearboxes and drive shafts.

Together with industrial activities already underway on the AW169 4.5 ton helicopter, the work is contributing to the transformation of the Yeovil facility into having a major role in the growing commercial helicopter market, enabling existing jobs to be sustained and new jobs to be created in the future.

FARNBOROUGH: Gripen makes first appearance with new Raven radar

Image
Saab's next-generation Gripen demonstrator is in the UK carrying a newly installed active electronically scanned array radar, with the technology representing a key element of the Swedish company's success in offering the fighter to the Swiss air force. Installed at Saab's Linköping site on 16 June, Selex Galileo's Raven ES-05 will be shown with the aircraft for the first time at the Farnborough air show.

The availability of the new array will be a pivotal factor in closing an expected 22-aircraft Gripen E/F deal with Switzerland, with pilots from the nation to assess the technology in flight testing from around late August or early September. The sensor can be repositioned by +/-100˚ to increase scan coverage.

Saab is now in "real negotiations" with the Swiss government to agree on a final contract value and delivery schedule, says Richard Smith, the company's regional marketing director for Europe, Gripen export. A framework agreement is likely to be signed in the "late summer", he says.

The Swedish and Swiss governments recently signed a letter of intent to cooperate on the Gripen E/F, with the former also looking to potentially buy the type.

Brazil is also currently being offered the Gripen E/F in a contest with the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Dassault Rafale. Smith says Saab is also looking to pursue any opportunity that may emerge in Denmark and the Netherlands: both partners in Lockheed Martin's F-35 programme. "The Swiss decision has built a good platform" for further sales of the new version, he notes.

FARNBOROUGH: MBDA unveils future vision for armed UAVs

Image
A new class of lightweight missiles and an innovative weapons launcher could enable unmanned air vehicles and even airships to perform precision strikes from standoff range, according to MBDA.

Releasing the results of its annual Concept Visions programme at the Farnborough air show on 9 July, the European guided weapons specialist unveiled two futuristic missile designs named Caelus and Gladius, as part of a wider Vigilus system.

Under its operating concept, the roughly 100kg (220lb) Caelus would provide surveillance and targeting cover, carrying an up-to-1kg warhead or deployable sensor load for a flight lasting up to 2h. With a launch weight of only 7kg, including a 1kg blast/fragmentation warhead, the complementary Gladius weapon would have a range of up to 16nm (30km).
MBDA staff from around Europe were in February invited to come up with ideas on how UAVs could be armed in the future. The best 20 of around 170 submissions were drawn on for the Vigilus design, says Chris Allard, MBDA's head of the Concepts Vision programme for 2012. Now in its third year, the internal initiative is aimed at showcasing technologies that could potentially be operational within around 20 years.

Another product of the scheme is the Armatus launcher, which would employ an innovative latch loading mechanism and use wireless power and data transfer to allow for simple integration with unmanned platforms. A graphic released by the company shows an airship with four launchers installed.

"We have gone to some major platform providers with the early concept to see how it could evolve," says Allard, identifying BAE Systems, Cassidian and Selex Galileo. "We have also talked to the militaries in the [company's partner] nations and received feedback."

FARNBOROUGH: Eurofighter boss says enhancements fundamental to sales success

Image
"A huge step." That was the verdict from the Eurofighter industrial consortium at the Farnborough air show on 10 July, the day after the confirmation of a four-nation agreement to proceed with a major package of enhancements.

Eurofighter last month issued a request for proposals on behalf of partner nations Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK to integrate an active electronically scanned array radar into the Typhoon, and will respond around October, says chief executive Enzo Casolini.

"The target is to have a contract by the middle of next year, for entry into service in 2015," says Casolini. "The nations are harmonising their requirements - we're more or less there." The Euroradar consortium will for now propose a system with a "simple swashplate" design for the array, which is expected to begin flight tests during 2013. Its response will also outline a proposed development path for the technology for the next decade, Eurofighter says.

Another key element of the programme will be introducing additional weapons, including MBDA's Meteor air-to-air missile. A Eurofighter test aircraft will fire its first of the beyond visual-range weapons late this year, according to BAE Systems chief test pilot Mark Bowman.

Casolini describes the four-nation support for future enhancements to the Typhoon as "fundamental in order to sell the aircraft abroad." The type is being offered to nations including Malaysia, Oman, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, while Eurofighter is also continuing to watch the situation in India, which last year selected the Dassault Rafale.
