AMMAN — The U.S., Jordan and 15 other countries will participate next month in military exercises to be heldin the kingdom, Jordan’s military said in a statement April 22.
Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, and his Jordanian counterpart, Meshaal Zaben, discussed the preparations for the land, sea and air exercises, the statement added.
A separate statement on the U.S. Department of Defense website said the war games — Exercise Eager Lion 12 — will be held from May 7 to May 28.
“The exercises will focus on boosting crisis management and techniques to fight terrorism,” the U.S. statement said, adding that the war games will see more than 8,000 participants displaying their skills.
Jordan is a major beneficiary of U.S. military and economic aid, with Washington granting Amman $2.4 billion in the past five years, according to official figures.

Jordan Interested in Russia’s Multiple Launch Rocket System
TOS-1 Buratino multiple launch rocket system
Russia’s arms trading company Rosoboronexport has offered Jordan the TOS-1 Buratino multiple launch rocket system, Newsru.com reported on Thursday.
Rosoboronexport’s delegation, headed by Valery Varlamov, is taking part in the Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference Sofex-2012 in Amman in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
“We have noticed that many delegations at the exhibition expressed high interest in this heavy flamethrower system. In particular, we are working on a project with Jordan on deploying this system on M-60 tank chassis,” Varlamov said.
The TOS-1 Buratino multiple rocket launching system carries 30 rockets and is mounted on a T-72 tank chassis.
Exercice militaire de grande ampleur en Jordanie des Américains et leurs alliés
Les Etats-Unis et leurs alliés ont commencé mardi en Jordanie un exercice impliquant quelque 12 000 militaires, ont annoncé de hauts gradés, décrivant cet exercice comme le plus important mené au Proche-Orient ces dix dernières années.
«Nous avons commencé à mettre en pratique les compétences que nous avons acquises ces dernières semaines dans un scénario de guerre irrégulière», a indiqué le général Ken Tovo, chef des forces américaines chargées des opérations spéciales, précisant que l’entraînement allait durer environ deux semaines. L’opération «Eager Lion 2012» est «le plus important exercice organisé dans la région ces dix dernières années», a-t-il déclaré à la presse à Amman. Y participent plus de 12 000 militaires venus de 19 pays, dont Bahreïn, l’Arabie Saoudite, le Qatar, l’Egypte, l’Irak, le Liban, le Pakistan, la France, la Grande-Bretagne, l’Italie, l’Espagne et l’Australie. Selon le général Aouni Adouane, chef des opérations et de la formation des forces armées jordaniennes, l’exercice en préparation depuis trois ans, «n’est lié à aucun évènement réel».
En réponse à une question sur les liens entre cet exercice et le soulèvement en cours en Syrie voisine, il a ajouté qu’«aucune force ne sera déployée au Nord» de la Jordanie, frontalier de la Syrie. Certains médias locaux ont émis l’hypothèse que ces exercices étaient liés aux violences qui ont fait plus de 12 000 morts en Syrie ces 14 derniers mois, et seraient l’occasion pour la Jordanie de s’assurer de la sécurité de ses frontières. «Cela n’a rien à voir avec la Syrie. Nous respectons la souveraineté de la Syrie. Il n’y a pas de tension entre les Syriens et nous. Nos objectifs sont clairs», a insisté le général Adouane.
