Type
E/F-band (2 to 4 GHz) mobile surveillance radar.
Description
AN/TPS-43 is a lightweight air and ground mobile radar that is designed to control aircraft or surface-to-air missile batteries in a wide variety of tactical environments. It provides complete 3-D coverage out to a range of 447 km on fighter size aircraft and measures heights over the full range by signal amplitude comparisons in six channels.
Extensive clutter rejection and electronic counter-countermeasures features are incorporated in the design, including a digital coherent moving target indicator system, pulse-to-pulse frequency agility, Jamming Analysis and Transmission Selection (JATS), coded pulse anti-clutter system and sidelobe blanking.
This latest model of the AN/TPS-43 includes extensive equipment refinements and increased operational capability. For ease of air shipment the equipment divides simply into two pallet loads each of less than 3,400 kg.
One load comprises the shelter unit, including processor, radios, transmitter/receiver and displays; the other consists of the antenna assembly and ancillary equipment. The entire equipment can be packed into two M35 trucks for road transport. It can also be airlifted in a single C-130 aircraft.
To minimise weight, light alloys are used wherever possible in the main mechanical structures and micro-miniaturisation techniques are used in the electronics circuits. The feed array features the use of a stripline matrix to form the height-finding beams. The Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) antenna is a sum and difference type providing an Interrogator SideLobe Suppression (ISLS) capability. A small printed circuit reference antenna is mounted on the back of the radar feed to act as the radar sidelobe reference antenna. Use of this

The AN/TPS-70(V)-5 is a mobile/fixed S-band surveillance radar designed to detect and track aircraft in a variety of environments at ranges out to 450 km. It incorporates advanced clutter rejection and ECCM features, with a low sidelobe antenna making it very difficult for enemy countermeasures to jam the system. Also incorporated are advanced signal analysis and processing and a full-range digital coherent MTI system. The antenna, a flat-slotted array measuring 5.5 m wide by 2.5 m high, is combined with programmable Doppler signal processing and an automated target extraction/tracking computer to provide the total operational scenario capability for automated and manual command centres. A multiple beam architecture with an entire redundant channel is employed, scanning all elevations and ranges simultaneously by means of six simultaneous beams. This ensures more `hits' per target for optimum clutter rejection and target extraction.
Description
The complete system consists of the main antenna, integrated secondary antenna, and a single operations/electronics shelter. For ease of transport the AN/TPS-70(V)-5 is deployed as two modules which can be carried to a forward position by truck, aircraft or helicopter. The AN/TPS-70(V)-5 is modular in design, the software being flexible to permit fast reprogramming to meet specific operational requirements. The system can be remotely controlled and monitored and can be operated either autonomously or as part of a larger network. The AN/TPS-70(V)-5 incorporates extensive built-in redundancy, self-test/diagnosis and solid-state subsystems for virtual 100 per cent system availability. System operation modes and parameters as well as self-test are controlled from a centralised touch-sensitive monitoring and fault isolation panel. Should a system fault occur, the faulty Line-Replaceable Unit (LRU) is automatically determined and displayed for rapid plug-in replacement. The AN/TPS-70(V)-5 electronics are very similar to those of the USAF AN/TPS-75 ensuring the benefits of long-term operational and logistic commonality. In addition to the mobile configuration the system is produced in a fixed-site variant, the AN/FPS-700.In operations with the US Air Force and Army, the AN/TPS-70 has demonstrated its ability to detect and track tactical ballistic missiles in real time and to provide national and theatre commanders with all required data including missile types and numbers, launch points and so on. The USAF is proceeding with a production programme to incorporate these capabilities in the AN/TPS-75 radar.
The AN/TPS-78 and the TPS-703 are the latest generation of state-of-the-art radars made possible by the technological advances in high power transistor design. Fielded and operationally proven by the United States Air Force and customers worldwide, the S-Band long-range AN/TPS-78 and the midrange TPS-703 are in 24-hour-a-day operation around the world.
