Softkill protection systems by Rheinmetall: Growing customer base for state-of-the-art protection

Rapid technological advances are making intelligent weapon systems smarter and deadlier than ever. Rheinmetall has specialized for many years in developing and producing high-quality components and innovative systems for protecting people, vehicles, aircraft, ships and installations, and offers a wide range of highly effective active, passive and softkill protection solutions. A growing customer base underlines Rheinmetall’s experience and competence in this field. Visitors to IDEX 2013 can view three of the company’s advanced passive protection systems: Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS), Bullfighter and the Rapid Obscurant System (ROSY).

Rheinmetall MASS: piggyback naval countermeasure system for added punch

Rheinmetall’s Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) protects ships from attacks with modern, sensor-guided anti-ship missiles on the high seas and littoral zones as well as from asymmetric, terrorist-type threats by firing decoy rounds which diverts incoming missiles from their intended target.

MASS has proven highly effective in various international trials. The system’s innovative, programmable omnispectral rounds – 32 per launcher – assure protection in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (radar, infrared, laser, electro-optic, ultraviolet). MASS can be installed on board any type of ship, and operates either in standalone mode or as an integral part of the ship’s networked C4I and weapon engagement systems.

In addition to the standard MASS configuration, Rheinmetall offers two optional versions, MASS_DUERAS and MASS_ISS.

The MASS_DUERAS is a piggyback solution. It features launching tubes for distraction rockets mounted on top of the MASS launcher. Anti-torpedo distraction rockets will also be available soon. In 2009 Canada chose the MASS_DUERAS as standard equipment for the upgrade program of its Halifax-class frigates.

Featuring built-in sensors for detecting radar, laser and electro-optical threats, the MASS Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) configuration has now been extended to include “NavGuard”, an active missile approach warning device. It is capable of detecting small incoming guided missiles such as MILAN, Sagger or Fagott, and thus closes a vulnerability gap when it comes to protecting vessels in littoral zones.

MASS offers a whole host of tactical, operational and logistical advantages, and is specifically designed to meet the changing requirements of modern navies, with abundant scope for future technological growth.

The procurement statistics bear this out. Since its market launch in 2002, thirteen nations have ordered a total of 200 MASS launcher systems for no fewer than 25 different types of vessels. One of the latest customers is the Algerian navy which has procured two MASS_4L for the Meko A200 frigates, each with a four launcher configuration and the long range firing and distraction capability MASS_DUERAS.

Rheinmetall Rosy: State-of-the-art protection at sea and on land

Rheinmetall’s 40mm Rapid Obscurant System (ROSY) is a countermeasure system designed for both naval and land applications.
The land version – the ROSY_L system – provides light military and civilian vehicles with 360° protection from unexpected attacks by countering conventional weapons, weapons with optical devices and laser rangefinders (TV-, EO-, IR-, IIR-, laser- and SACLOS-guided weapons). Unlike conventional smoke protection systems, ROSY not only produces an instantaneous, large-area, multispectral interruption of the line of sight in a fraction of a second, but also generates a dynamic smoke screen, capable of providing vehicles on the move with sustained protection from multiple attacks.

The naval version ROSY_N is optimized for protecting small vessels such as fast attack craft, patrol vessels and rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIB). ROSY_N creates a 1,000 square-metre multispectral smoke screen in just 0.4 seconds and can counter multiple threats without reloading. This helps to protect sailors, coast guards and special operations forces units operating in coastal waters and on rivers to defend themselves from sudden flat trajectory fire, such as small arms fire, RPGs and missiles.

Just recently the Peruvian Navy has equipped six of its Griffon GH-2000 TD(M) hovercrafts with ROSY_N to protect them during operations in the Amazon region to suppress drug trafficking.

At IDEX 2013, Rheinmetall is displaying the group’s leading competence in air defence.
Oerlikon Skyshield MOOTW/C-RAM System
The Oerlikon Skyshield MOOTW/C-RAM system is Rheinmetall’s answer to the threat from rockets, artillery and mortar (RAM). It is specifically designed to defend high-value civilian or military assets from RAM attacks, whether in high-intensity combat scenarios or in “military operations other than war” (MOOTW). The system can also be used for protecting critical infrastructure or targets with a high symbolic value from terrorists and insurgents employing unorthodox tactics. The Skyshield MOOTW/C-RAM system depends on Oerlikon Ahead airburst technology. Available in various configurations, the Oerlikon Revolver Gun is suitable for multiple applications. This state-of-the-art system can operate in a conventional antiaircraft role or be used for protecting military and civilian assets from RAM threats, and is also highly effective in a naval context: known as the Millennium Gun, it is already in service with two navies.Highly sophisticated yet extremely robust, this state-of-the-art system combines permanent airspace surveillance, automated detection and tracking of extremely small targets, prior warning of areas under threat and the interception and destruction of approaching RAM targets. Coupled with an Oerlikon Skymaster command and control system in MOOTW configuration, the Oerlikon Skyshield MOOTW/C-RAM system is entirely up to the task.Instantly and automatically, the Skyshield MOOTW/C-RAM system reliably neutralizes a wide variety of threats. It calculates the incoming projectile’s point of impact and warns personnel in the threatened zone. Advanced fire control technology results in optimum, precisely timed target assignment and interception.

Oerlikon Ahead Air Burst Munition
Each round of Rheinmetall’s 35mm Oerlikon Ahead airburst ammunition contains a lethal payload of heavy metal spin-stabilized subprojectiles, unleashed in the path of an oncoming target at a programmable, predefined point in time. A short burst of Ahead ammunition produces a dense cloud of lethal subprojectiles. These penetrate the outer skin of the target, causing catastrophic damage to its interior.Ahead airburst ammunition can bring down targets at greater distances with fewer rounds fired, making it a much more cost-effective solution than conventional ammunition. The technology can be used in ammunition ranging in calibre from 30mm to 76mm. Ahead technology is suitable for ground, air force and naval applications. As an alternative option, Ahead rounds can also be fired in non-fused mode, in which they behave like frangible rounds upon impact and are able to penetrate and destroy hard targets very effectively. In effect, Ahead is actually two types of ammunition in one.Furthermore, Rheinmetall’s Ahead technology is by no means limited to static defence roles. Mobile applications are equally feasible. For short-term missions, a truck-mounted version is available which can be deployed without unloading the system from the truck. This is particularly useful if the mission involves protecting a succession of different sites for short periods. Mounting a Skyshield air defence system on an all-terrain 6x6 or 8x8 vehicle ensures maximum operational flexibility.Existing Skyguard and Skyshield systems can also be retrofitted with Ahead technology. Furthermore, due to the complete modularity of its systems, Rheinmetall is able to bring additional components into play, readily creating multi-mission capabilities tailored to the needs of individual clients.

http://www.ndr.de/regional/schleswig-ho ... au139.html
HDW also on the rise
Positive it will work at HDW. For the parent company, ThyssenKrupp has abandoned them, there can still only build submarines. The reason is a contract for two frigates for Algeria. After ThyssenKrupp sold its shipyards in Hamburg and Emden, remains the only Group of Kiel, to build them: For Dockkapazitäten can be used, and the HDW shipyard neighboring ADM Kiel have formed a consortium. The work on the frigates have already begun. HDW is currently an additional 100 shipbuilders.

Training aid as an incentive

Buyer of warships lay more countries attach great importance to training package by the German Navy. Algeria has made the purchase of two frigates worth over 400 million euros depending on an appropriate training package. The Navy conducts regular exercises and training modules together with allied nations through. So in Neustadt in Holstein. In such training courses will soon be Algerian Marines will take part.
