Nexter TITUS vehicle at DSEI 2013

At DSEI 2013, French manufacturer Nexter unveils its new 6x6 armoured vehicle TITUS (Tactical Infantry Transport & Utility System)

TITUS is the ultimate armored vehicle designed by Nexter in order to meet all the constraints of the modern hybrid warfare. Continuing a famous long lineage, including Leclerc MBT, VBCI and Aravis, all combat proven in many theatres of operation, Nexter combined the best of its experience and technology in TITUS. The tactical commander disposes now of a 6x6 vehicle customizable for an evolving environment. TITUS is the versatile armoured vehicle of the XXIst century. From Infantry transport to combat support and combat service support functions, from Peace Keeping Operation to Counter Insurgency, TITUS brings the technology and the Nexter touch into the heart of the action.


TITUS is mounted on a Tatra 6x6 chassis, coupled with an engine of 440Hp (550Hp in option) offering an exceptional mobility. Wrapped with an armored skin of last generation, from level 2 to level 4, TITUS is also protected against mines (4a/4b) and IEDs blasts (up to 150kg), by the original Nexter SAFEPRO design (hanged floor, energy absorbing seats…). RPG protection (PG Guard can be added). Thus, the units can be committed into the battlefield quickly and safely. Furthermore, to allow the crew (Driver, Gunner and Tactical commander) and the embarked squad to last a long time on the terrain, an exceptional effort of habitability has been done by Nexter in the hull. Internal volume is beyond 14m3, added by 4m3 of storage, and, as the hull -without obstacle from front to back- opens towards outside by a ramp with a minimal ground step (280mm), egress and ingress are really facilitated.

Tawazun of UAE exhibits NIMR 6x6 personnel carrier and Multi-Role combat vehicle

Tawazun, the UAE-based, defence-focused investment group, is the International Partner for DSEI 2013. Tawazun will be exhibiting on its own stand in the UAE national pavilion and will be showcasing the latest products of its subsidiaries in the event.

hrough a programme of strategic investments and partnerships with carefully selected, world-class market leaders, Tawazun has been making a major contribution to the fast-growing industrial base of the UAE since 2007. With an unrelenting focus on economic diversification and sustainability as well as technology transfer, the group is building a strong local capability across a number of areas in the Defense and Security sectors.

Based in Abu Dhabi, NIMR Automotive designs, manufactures and assembles a range of multi-purpose vehicles, entirely within the UAE, to meet the growing needs of international armed forces and internal security organisations. NIMR vehicles can be configured for a variety of combat and non-combat functions - armament carrier; logistics vehicle; ambulance; mobile Command and Control centre - and a range of scenarios - from tactical missions in harsh, arid environments to modern urban warfare; deep infiltration missions; reconnaissance; border surveillance; riot control. Depending on customer requirements, NIMR vehicles can be armoured to provide full blast and ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 3.

In addition to fulfilling the role of International Partner, Tawazun will also be exhibiting two NIMR vehicles - one in the Static Vehicle Display Area and one on the Tawazun stand which can be found at location N7-250.

The NIMR 6x6 Armoured Personnel Carrier on the Tawazun stand is designed to provide maximum operational flexibility and protection, the NIMR Armoured Personnel Carrier is a long range 6x6 vehicle with the capacity to transport up to 10 soldiers.

It can additionally be fitted with remotely operated weapon and communication systems. The vehicle has a payload of 1.8 tonnes and all equipment is stored and mounted so as to be both visible and easily accessible whilst also being secured to ensure that it will not fly loose in the event of a blast impact. Capable of operating in temperatures ranging between -30°C and +55°C, the Personnel Carrier has the same power unit, suspension and braking system as the Multi-Role Combat Vehicle.
At the Land Zone static display area, Tawazun displays its NIMR 6x6 Multi-Role Combat Vehicle. Designed to provide operational flexibility and armoured protection for a crew of 4, the vehicle is fitted with a turret-mounted, 30 mm auto cannon gun system and a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun with commander override control along with communication systems and laser range finder.

Equipped with electric actuated doors and two escape hatches, the vehicle is powered by a water-cooled turbocharged diesel engine and features independent suspension as well as six wheel air-over-hydraulic service brakes.

New AgustaWestland Helo Design?



But one of the most eye-catching elements of the display is this image, entitled RWUAS, which shows an unmanned helicopter carrying out a range of tasks around the battlefields depicted on the stand including lifting under slung loads, and conducting intelligence gathering missions.

Company officials say the aircraft is simply an artist’s impression and, of course, it is possible that the aircraft is simply a figment of a designer’s imagination, but more often than not, such designs are often based in reality.

AgustaWestland has secured a £2.4 million U.K. defense ministry contract to develop a rotary-wing UAS concept for ship-borne operations and the company is understood to be using the PZL-Swidnik-built SW-4 Solo for the Capability Concept Demonstrator (CCD) program. The company revealed a plan to develop an unmanned SW-4 at the MSPO show in Poland back in 2012.

Any machine adapted for the UAS role is going to be heavily modified, and that can be clearly seen in the image. But the image shown on the stand is certainly not based on an SW-4 and, although it bears a similarity to the company’s new AW169, that aircraft would be too large for a potential RWUAS role. Indeed the tail boom design does not match any current product in the AgustaWestland family line or those that we currently know of. The company is developing a single-engined 2.5 tonne helicopter in conjunction with Russian Helicopters, major agreements for the development of which were signed at the Moscow MAKS airshow last month.

A 2.5 tonne helicopter would of course be a reasonable size for such an aircraft.

FNH concentrates on MAG and SCAR products at DSEI 2013

At DSEI 2013, Fabrique Nationale d' Herstal (FNH) the Belgian firearms manufacturer is showcasing its MAG machine gun and SCAR rifles.



The FN MAG (Mitrailleuse d'Appui Général) is 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun is displayed here at DSEI 2013. The latest big order for this machine gun was from the French Army a couple of years ago. They ordered 10,000 pieces to replace their older AA-52 and AA-NF1.



The Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle (SCAR) is a modular rifle available in two versions:
The SCAR-L, for "light", is chambered in the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge.
The SCAR-H, for "heavy", fires 7.62×51mm NATO.


Both are available in Long Barrel and Close Quarters Combat variants and can be fitted with a FN40GL (40mm grenade launcher). FN40GL system features a double action trigger and a swing out chamber; meaning the launcher does not need to be re-cocked if the grenade does not fire, and that longer grenades can be used.
A sniper variant, Sniper Support Rifle (SSR) called SCAR-H PR, is also showcased here at DSEI 2013.

Kongsberg showcased its NSM and JSM anti-ship cruise missiles at DSEI 2013

Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence Systems showcased its Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and Joint Strike Missile (JSM) during DSEI 2013, the International Defence & Security event in London, United Kingdom. The NSM is a flexible system which can be launched from a variety of platforms against a variety of targets. Based on the NSM, the JSM was designed specifically for the F-35, to be carried externally and internally in the weapons bay.
