sraeli aircraft spray herbicides over Syria, destroying crops
Israeli aircraft have reportedly sprayed herbicides over farmland in Quneitra, causing severe crop damage.

Several photos and videos sent to the FRANCE24 Observers appear to show Israeli aircraft flying at low altitude over agricultural areas in Syria’s Quneitra governorate.
In some of the footage, white trails can be seen behind the planes, suggesting that substances were being sprayed. Farmers in multiple villages across Quneitra say Israeli aircraft dispersed chemical agents over their land on January 25, 27, and 30, 2026. The reported operations took place along the Alpha Line, which separates Syria from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
Syria’s Ministry of Agriculture said on February 11 that laboratory tests conducted in Quneitra did not detect acute levels of toxicity. However, the Ministry did not specify what substances had been sprayed.
'Israel' admits ecocide in Syria, Lebanon
On February 2, Israeli television channel i24News reported that the Israeli army was spraying herbicides near the Syrian and Lebanese borders to eliminate vegetation that could provide cover for militants. The Israeli army did not respond to questions from the FRANCE 24 Observers team regarding the reported operations in Quneitra.
Abu Salah, a pseudonym used to protect his identity, is a farmer from the village of al-Razaniyeh in Quneitra. He says aircraft flew over his land on January 27 and began spraying an unknown substance.
“We saw it falling onto our fields,” he said. “Within ten days, everything turned yellow and died. I lost 75 hectares of wheat. The entire harvest was gone.”
He explained that he had borrowed money to plant the crops after several difficult seasons marked by drought. With improved rainfall this year, he had hoped to recover financially. Instead, he now faces mounting debts.
Abu Salah also described ongoing insecurity in the area, saying that since the fall of the Syrian regime on December 8, 2024, residents have faced repeated incursions, gunfire, and arrests. He said he had previously lost livestock after his herd came under fire.
“We feel caught in the middle,” he said, accusing Israeli forces of trying to make the area uninhabitable while criticizing Syrian authorities for failing to protect residents.
Local authorities cite herbicides as affecting thousands of hectares
The FRANCE 24 Observers team also contacted Quneitra’s director of agriculture, Jamal Mohammad Ali, who said Israeli aircraft sprayed “the entire area along the border, from north to south.”
Ali said technical teams were dispatched to collect soil and plant samples from the affected farmland. While the full results have not yet been made public, he said that preliminary findings identified “general herbicides, diuron and 2,4-DB.”
According to Ali, crops exposed to the spraying turned yellow before drying out completely and dying. In some areas, he said, the damage continues to spread beyond the initially affected plots.
Local authorities estimate that around 400 hectares of grain fields and 4,000 hectares of pastureland, crucial for livestock grazing, were impacted. Officials warn that the damage poses a serious threat to farmers’ livelihoods and food security in the region.
The Israeli army also reportedly carried out spraying operations near the village of Kodna. Satellite images shared on X by the investigative account Samir were analysed to compare vegetation levels in the targeted area since 2022. Infrared imagery, where red typically indicates dense vegetation, suggests a marked decline in plant cover by 2026.

Alawite women abducted and raped, others sold by Jolani's men: Report

Since former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took power in Syria, dozens of Alawite women have been abducted and raped, and forced by new authorities to change their testimonies, BBC reports.
The Syrian Feminist Lobby (SFL), a women's rights advocacy group, told the British broadcaster that it had recorded reports of more than 80 missing women and had verified 26 of them as abductions.
Ramia, a 19-year-old woman from Lattakia, recounted that she had been kidnapped while preparing to have a picnic in a field in her village in Latakia.
While her mother and siblings were about to arrive, a white car pulled up and three armed men got out, claiming to be members of Syria's General Security forces, and forced Ramia into the vehicle.
“The car drove in the opposite direction from our house, and then we left the village. That's when I realized they had kidnapped me,” Ramia said.
“They beat me. I started crying and screaming, but they kept hitting me even harder. One of them asked me if I was Sunni or Alawite. When I answered that I was an Alawite, they started insulting the sect.”
Ramia was taken to Idlib and raped, before being released after two days.
In Idlib, her captor, who did not speak Arabic fluently and was likely a foreign militant who had come to fight for HTS, took pictures of her to send “to the emir, who would decide her fate.”
The militant's wife, who was in the same house with his children, told Ramia that the picture “would be used to determine her price when she is sold.”
When Ramia asked her kidnapper's wife how many women he had abducted before her, the wife replied that there were “many.”
“Some are raped and sent back to their families, and others are sold,” the militant's wife told Ramia.
A security source in one of the coastal regions of Syria confirmed to BBC that abductions had occurred, claiming that “investigations have been opened into them” and that “measures have been taken to dismiss” those involved from service, including security personnel.
But the kidnapped women and their families emphasized that the authorities have made no effort to hold the kidnappers accountable.
Ramia said she thought the so-called HTS police were interested in her return, but after the kidnapper was identified, they stopped answering her family's repeated calls to follow up on the investigation.
The family even decided to leave the country after receiving a series of threatening phone calls.
More Alawites killed as Syria's civilian death toll under HTS nears 8,000
Three Alawite civilians are killed in western Syria overnight, as Syria’s death toll nears 8,000 in six months.
Ali, a man in his thirties whose wife Nour disappeared while on her way to visit family in a coastal village, told BBC that he knows the kidnapper's identity and has shared all his information with the security services, but is still waiting for a response.
“I suffer day and night, spending all my time alone in the forest, praying for my wife and for her return to us,” he said.
His wife was returned several weeks later, but they declined to give details about the circumstances of her abduction.
Another returnee was Nasma, a mother in her thirties, who was also abducted and held in what appeared to be an industrial facility in Idlib for seven days.
Three Syrian men who were holding her “hurled sectarian insults at me, saying that Alawite women were created to be captives”, Nasma said.
Nasma was raped multiple times by her captors. “All I could think about was death. I would die, and my child would be left without a mother,” she stated.
After the man responsible for her kidnappers decided to release her, Nasma went to the security authorities, who treated her rudely and mocked her.
“They said they knew the terrorist groups that kidnapped me, but when I went to file the police report, they asked me to change my statement and claim that I had just gone out for a walk,” she added.
According to the report, Nasma is not the only one who was asked to change her statements after being kidnapped.
BBC said another woman who had just returned after being abducted, was too afraid to talk to the media, especially after “security personnel asked her to change her story,” which she refused to do, according to a relative.
The SFL says that the testimonies of the abducted women “indicate the presence of an extremist religious ideology in many of the kidnapping cases.”
In December 2024, the HTS led by former Daesh deputy Muhammad al-Jolani took control of Damascus in a surprise offensive that was launched from their stronghold in northwestern Syria, reaching the capital in less than two weeks.
The HTS administration has since been accused of flagrant violations of human rights in Syria, particularly against minorities, namely Syria's Alawite minority, drawing widespread condemnations from the international community.
In November, Jolani's interior ministry claimed that out of 42 cases of kidnappings it had probed, the allegations were found to be false in 41 of them.
However, various reports have said that the widespread kidnapping of Alawite women began shortly after the collapse of al-Assad's government, intensifying after HTS-led forces massacred at least 1,600 Alawite civilians in March 2025.
After news of the abductions began reaching the media and gaining attention, the Jolani regime and affiliated media outlets launched a propaganda campaign to hide the kidnappings.
The campaign included forcing victims to make videos claiming that they had not been abducted, but had run away with their Sunni Muslim lovers, and publishing them on social media.
Despite numerous reports from human rights organizations documenting sectarian violence, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, and sexual violence, Western governments have increasingly shifted toward open engagement the Jolani regime.
In 2025, the US formally removed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham from its terrorist designation list, and Jolani held direct talks in Washington with President Donald Trump, a move critics say reinforced claims that Washington has come to view him not only as a pragmatic partner but, in practice, as a strategic asset despite his group’s terrorist past.

Les forces israéliennes mènent une incursion dans le sud de la Syrie.
Les forces israéliennes ont pénétré dans des zones rurales de Daraa et de Quneitra, en Syrie,
alors que des informations font état de poursuites des incursions dans le sud du pays.

The governor of Syria’s Daraa province reported that a patrol consisting of eight military vehicles belonging to the Israeli occupation forces entered the Wadi al-Raqad area in the western Daraa countryside in what was described as a sudden field movement.
According to available information, the military vehicles reached the vicinity of the Wadi al-Raqad bridge, where they stopped and deployed in the area for a period of time, without clear details emerging regarding the nature of the mission or the reasons behind the incursion.
The governor added that the actions carried out by the Israeli forces inside the area remain unclear, while a state of anticipation prevailed in the surrounding region amid the absence of any official comment on the incident.
Reports of separate incursion in Quneitra
The Syrian Observatory also reported on Wednesday that Israeli forces had carried out another incursion into Syrian territory a day earlier, with a military unit consisting of six vehicles and a white minibus entering the town of al-Rafid in the Quneitra countryside.
These movements come amid continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and airspace, particularly in southern Syria, including ground incursions, the establishment of temporary checkpoints, road closures, and raids and arrests targeting Syrian civilians.
Earlier, Human Rights Watch revealed that the Israeli occupation government had approved a plan worth up to $334 million aimed at expanding settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan.
The organization also stated that Israeli forces had crossed the 1974 disengagement line and begun forcibly displacing residents from Syrian villages in the area.
8 invasions in 72 hours
In late April, Israeli occupation forces advanced into the village of Maariya in the Yarmouk Basin area of western rural Daraa, deploying a military convoy of around 20 vehicles, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.
According to the report, the forces patrolled the village under drone surveillance before later withdrawing.
In parallel, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that southern Syria has witnessed, over the past 72 hours, intense and unprecedented Israeli military activity, described as an attempt to impose a “fait accompli” through a series of ground operations extending deep into the border areas of Daraa and Quneitra.
The Observatory documented eight separate incursions across multiple locations, during which Israeli forces deployed bulldozers and heavy machinery to East Tal al-Ahmar in southern Quneitra countryside. There, they reportedly constructed earthen barriers and established observation points, while raising the Israeli flag over the hill overlooking western rural Daraa.
The operations also included the movement of a large military convoy of more than 20 vehicles from the al-Jazeera base, which patrolled Maariya village, alongside a similar incursion between the villages of Jamlah and Saisoun in the Yarmouk Basin area.
