Clinton Grilled on Security Lapses in Benghazi Attack

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified Wednesday before a Senate Committee about last year's attack on the U.S. mission in the Benghazi, Libya, in a hearing that included sharp criticism from lawmakers on her handling of the incident.
Among her harshest critics on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was one-time Republican presidential candidate, Senator John McCain.
'There are many questions [about Benghazi] that are unanswered and the answers frankly that you have this morning are not satisfactory,' he said.
Republican Senator Bob Corker said security shortfalls point to a larger problem.
'It seems to be Benghazi symbolizes just the woeful unpreparedness that our nation as it relates to issues in North Africa,' he said.
Clinton agreed, saying 'Make no mistake about it. We need a better strategy.'

Growing threat in North Africa

Clinton issued a warning of her own, saying there is a growing jihadist threat across northern Africa.
'We have to recognize this is a global movement,' she said. 'We can kill leaders, but until we help establish strong democratic institutions, until we do a better job communication our values and building relationships, we are going to be faced with this level of instability.'
Clinton said the Benghazi attack is part of a broader strategic challenge for the United States and African allies in the fight against terrorism........

Panel's findings
The Accountability Review Board that investigated the Benghazi attack said senior level 'systematic failures and management deficiencies' within two State Department bureaus led to a security posture that was inadequate to deal with terrorist attacks at the facilities in Benghazi. It said the number of diplomatic security staff members there at the time of the attack was 'inadequate' in spite of repeated requests from diplomats in Libya for additional staffing.....................

Initial response criticized
The Benghazi attack and the initial response from the Obama administration became a highly charged issue in the weeks leading up to his November re-election.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice was criticized by Republican lawmakers after she initially described the attack as a 'spontaneous reaction' to protests near the U.S. embassy in Cairo in response to an anti-Islamic video that was produced in the United States......

John Kerry sera bien le prochain secrétaire d’Etat américain. Le démocrate vient d‘être confirmé par les sénateurs par 94 voix contre 3. Vendredi, il remplacera officiellement Hillary Clinton qui quitte le département d’Etat après quatre ans de loyaux services. A 69 ans, John Kerry bénéficie d’une longue expérience dans la politique étrangère expérience qu’il aura enrichie avec, entre autres, la présidence de la commission des affaires étrangères du Sénat qu’il occupait depuis 2008.
Ainsi, l’adversaire malheureux de George W. Bush, en 2004, revient au premier plan de la politique américaine. Parmi ses dossiers prioritaires, le nouveau secrétaire d’Etat liste le Proche-Orient et la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique.

Elle a des problémes de santé depuis plusieurs semaines. Elle a même été opérée d'1 caillot de sang au cerveau, si mes souvenirs sont justes.

en va voir se que John Kerry a dans le ventre concernant le conflit israelo-palestinien a savoir s'il va prendre une position plus impartial ou se contente de prendre position pour Israël en usant a chaque foie de son droit de veto pour la protéger aveuglément au conseil de sécurité de l'ONU

Les gens changent & se remplacent, mais la politique US envers Israel reste la même...

en fait se qu'il y a de nouveau avec se nouveau monda d'obama c'est qu'il n'a pas était soutenu par Israël , Benyamin Netanyahou avait ouvertement appelé l’électorat juif aux USA a voté contre obama pendant la compagne électorale .
Israël risque de subir un douloureux retour du battons .

C'est vrai... Ce n'est pas 1 secret qu'Obama & Netanyahou se détestent.
Même si je pense que rien ne va vraiment changer dans les relations USA-Israel, plusieurs choses sont nouvelles, surtout en Israel.
D'abord, comme tu l'as dit SR, la réelection d'Obama est 1 trés mauvaise nouvelle pour Netanyahou, qui aurait préferer 1 candidat Républicain, bien sécuritaire qui considére que tout se qui se trouve à l'Est d'Israel est du terrorisme potentiel. Sans compter avec le revers que vient d'encaisser le Likhoud & l'accord obligatoire pour garder le pouvoir.
Mais les USA ne peuvent se passer d'1 allié si puissant dans la région, & 1 si bon client...

Study: Iraq, Afghan Wars To Cost U.S. Up to $6 Trillion

WASHINGTON — The Iraq and Afghanistan wars will cost the United States between $4 trillion and $6 trillion in the long term, constraining the government’s budget for decades to come, a study says.

Harvard University scholar Linda Bilmes concluded that the United States will face increasing costs to care for an estimated 2.5 million veterans and to pay down debt incurred by borrowing to pay for the wars.

“As a consequence of these wartime spending choices, the United States will face constraints in funding investments in personnel and diplomacy, research and development and new military initiatives,” said the report released Thursday. “In short, there will be no peace dividend, and the legacy of Iraq and Afghanistan wars will be costs that persist for decades.”

Bilmes, who served in government under former President Bill Clinton, calculated that the United States has already spent nearly $2 trillion directly for the two wars launched by former President George W. Bush. But Bilmes’ study said the biggest cost would be medical care and disability benefits, saying that more than half of the 1.56 million troops discharged from service have already been granted benefits for life.

Bilmes, who called the numbers unprecedented, said that costs will climb over decades. She wrote that the peak year for disability payments related to World War I, which ended in 1918, was 1969, as veterans became elderly.

“The magnitude of future expenditures will be even higher for the current conflicts, which have been characterized by much higher survival rates, more generous benefits and new, expensive medical treatments,” she said.

Bilmes also factored in debt, finding no precedent for a time when the United States went to war while lowering taxes, with the possible exception of the Revolutionary War, when U.S. colonies borrowed from France.

The study also looked at social costs, with families burdened with the effects of the deaths or injuries of service members.

The United States is expected to maintain a limited military presence in Afghanistan after 2014, when President Barack Obama plans to withdraw combat troops first sent after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Opinion polls show that most of the U.S. public has grown weary of the longest U.S. war, in Afghanistan, and is critical of Bush’s decision to invade Iraq a decade ago.

Donald Rumsfeld, the defense secretary under Bush, said before the invasion that the Iraq war would cost around $50 billion and called higher estimates “baloney.”
