Un Mi-28N s’écrase en Russie

Image
A Russian Army Mil Mi-28N, one of the force's newest machines, crashed on Thursday at its base in Mozdok, North Ossetia.
The two-man crew was not injured according to preliminary information.
"An Mi-28N made a heavy landing while on a training flight," a source in the Southern Military District said. "The crew was not hurt and neither was anyone on the ground. The cause is being investigated."
Two other Mi-28Ns have been lost in accidents in recent years. The crew of an Mi-28 was injured in February 2011 when the aircraft suffered a gearbox failure. Another Mi-28N was lost in June 2009 when it suffered an engine failure after ingesting gases from rockets it was firing at low-level on a range.

Un Blackhawk se crashe (talibans :?:) en Afghanistan faisant 11 tués
A U.S. military helicopter crashed during a firefight with insurgents in a remote area of southern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing seven Americans and four Afghans in one of the deadliest air disasters of a war now into its second decade. The Taliban claimed they gunned down the Black Hawk.
American service personnel in Afghanistan are dying at a rate of about one per day so far this year despite a drawdown of troops. That death rate has risen recently with the summer fighting season in full gear and a rash of attacks by Afghan security forces on their foreign trainers and partners.
NATO forces said they could not confirm what caused Thursday's crash and stressed that it was still being investigated. The Black Hawk was operating in support of an ongoing assault on the ground but initial indications were that it was not shot down, according to U.S. officials who spoke anonymously because the investigation was continuing.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said insurgent fighters struck the helicopter in Kandahar province on Thursday morning. He declined to give further details in a phone call with The Associated Press.
The Kandahar provincial government backed the Taliban claim. It said the helicopter was shot down in Shah Wali Kot district, a rural area north of Kandahar city where insurgents move freely and regularly launch attacks. Provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal did not provide details or say how the province had confirmed the information.
Kandahar is a traditional Taliban stronghold and the spiritual birthplace of the hardline Islamist movement, which ruled Afghanistan before being ousted in 2001 by the U.S.-led alliance for sheltering al-Qaida's leaders.
Thursday's crash came less than a week after six American service members were gunned down, apparently by two members of the Afghan security forces they were training to take over the fight against the insurgency.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday that the U.S. is prioritizing efforts to prevent more of these types of attacks. NATO says that 34 international service members have been killed in attacks by Afghan security forces or militants wearing their uniforms so far this year.
The international force "is continually assessing and refining procedures in force protection so that we can both meet mission requirements and ensure the safety of our forces," Carney said.
The Taliban said Thursday that the insider attacks are part of a strategy to undercut the alliance between the Afghan government and international forces.
"Mujahideen have cleverly infiltrated the ranks of the enemy according to the plan given to them last year," the militants said in their annual statement ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.
The attacks on U.S. service personnel have stirred fresh doubts about the capability of Afghan security forces to secure the country in less than two years' time. The majority of international combat troops are scheduled to exit the country by the end of 2014.
With Thursday's crash, at least 26 Americans have been killed so far this month and at least 219 so far this year.
That adds up to fewer deaths than in 2011, when 233 U.S. service personnel had died by the end of July. But more than 100,000 U.S. forces were stationed in the country a year ago, and thousands of those have already left as part of the drawdown ordered by President Barack Obama. The military hopes to trim the force to 68,000 troops in Afghanistan by October.
The Taliban, meanwhile, are not laying low. Insurgent attacks were up 11 percent in the three months of April through June compared with the same period of 2011, according to NATO. And the U.N. reported last week that targeted killings of civilians were surging. Afghan police and army casualties have also been on the rise.

An Air Force investigation has determined that the pilot of an F-15E Strike Eagle became disoriented during a March 28 training mission and mistakenly believed he was inverted before the jet’s backseater took control before ejecting, crashing the jet into a radio tower in Southwest Asia.

The pilot, Capt. Francis D. Imlay, was killed in the crash, and the weapons system officer survived with minor injuries. They were both with the 391st Fighter Squadron at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. The $47.1 million aircraft was destroyed in the crash.

The Air Force’s Accident Investigation Board report, released Tuesday, also found that the F-15E’s electronic attitude director indicator, the pilot’s main way to determine attitude, was not on the cockpit’s display, causing the pilot to roll the aircraft.

In addition to the destroyed jet, the host nation’s radio tower and other assets were damaged, the report said. The nation was not identified in the report.

Un Mil Mi-17 militaire kazakh en entrainement s'est crashé faisant 4 victimes qui étaient à son bord

Image
A military helicopter has crashed near Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, killing four people on board, defence ministry officials say.

An investigation into the cause of the MI-17 crash near the military airport has begun, reports the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency.

The helicopter was conducting a training flight, officials say.

Once a part of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan still uses old, Soviet-built aircraft.

The crash happened at about 08:00 (02:00 GMT), when the helicopter started to burn, according to reports.

"The investigation has just started, so all the circumstances of the accident are under investigation," Zhenis Temekov, an official from the military prosecutor office, was quoted by Interfax as saying.

The government has set up a commission led by the air force to look into the crash.

Image
An Airbus Military A330 tanker’s refueling boom fell off during a test flight over Spain, Airbus said.

The plane, scheduled to be delivered to the United Arab Emirates later this month, was flying in a region between Madrid and Portugal when the incident happened at 7:30 p.m. local time Sept. 10.

An Airbus Military spokesman said it was “too early” to give any indication as to the cause of the mishap.

The spokesman said Airbus had “advised the Royal Australian Air Force as a precautionary measure to stop using the boom until further investigations had taken place.”

The RAAF is the launch customer for the boom-equipped A330 and has four of the five aircraft it ordered in-service. The aircraft also has Cobham-supplied probe refueling systems fitted.

The UAE aircraft was flying at 27,000 feet conducting a series of tests, including deploying the boom, when the system fell away at the point where it links to the fuselage.

Nobody on the ground or in the aircraft was injured and the A330 returned, with minor damage, to the Airbus base at Getafe, near Madrid.

The boom was recovered Sept. 11. Company executives were scheduled to hold a news conference later Sept. 11 at the ongoing Berlin air show.

The Airbus Military crew manning the A330 was deploying the boom when it fell from the fuselage, people familiar with the incident said.

It’s the second time the Airbus-developed boom has been involved in a serious in-flight incident. In early 2011 the boom of an A330 multi-role tanker transport destined for delivery to the RAAF detached during a training flight refueling a Portuguese Lockheed Martin F-16 over the Atlantic Ocean.

The Airbus spokesman said the incidents weren’t related.

“A fix has been implemented to resolve that [previous] issue involving the installation of a warning on the MRTT’s control system if the refueling approaches the edge of its cleared envelope,” he said.

Britain’s Royal Air Force has started taking delivery of the MRTT machines. Its version, known as the Voyager, does not use a boom but relies on the Cobham probe.

The first aircraft destined to fulfill a Royal Saudi Air Force order has been delivered and is conducting crew training in Spain.
