Northrop Grumman Delivers Litening G4 Advanced Targeting Pods

The Northrop Grumman Corporation has completed delivery of the first 50 Litening G4 Advanced Targeting Pods under a $277.8 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract from the U.S. Air Force. Litening G4 has begun full operations at its first military base with seven additional base deployments planned in the near future.

Litening G4 and the equivalent ‘Litening Advanced Targeting Pod – Sensor Enhancement’ (ATP-SE) has a full one megapixel (1000×1000) Forward Looking Infrared in addition to the megapixel size Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) sensors and optics already introduced in the earlier Litening AT version, offering wider field of view and enhanced zoom to deliver more accurate target identification and location at longer ranges than previous generations of the Litening.

Another new feature is the ‘Laser Target Imaging Program’ (LTIP), employing a short wave infrared (SWIR) laser augmented imaging, to enhance the targeting system’s capability to capture images in situations where medium-wave infrared (MWIR) forward-looking infrared and CCD are ineffective. In addition, the Litening ATP-SE employs an integral digital two-way data link, facilitating encrypted data communications with compatible land-based or airborne digital datalink devices.

Boeing Delivers 12th C-40A to US Navy

Boeing delivered the 12th C-40A aircraft to the U.S. Navy on Oct. 21. The Boeing 737-700 derivative was modified at the company's Wichita facility for troop and cargo transport missions.

Boeing and Navy representatives marked the milestone with a ceremonial "passing of the key" at the Wichita facility before the aircraft departed for its home base at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.

"The C-40A combines Boeing Commercial Airplanes' best-selling 737 with Boeing Defense, Space & Security's modification expertise," said Steve Wade, general manager of Boeing Global Transport & Executive Systems. "This aircraft increases the Navy's capability for rapid response worldwide, and we're looking forward to continuing to enhance the fleet with as many aircraft as the Navy requires.

L'US Navy prend livraison d'un nouveau sous-marin nucléaire d'attaque


Huitième sous-marin nucléaire d'attaque du type Virginia, l'USS California (SSN 781) a été officiellement intégré à l'US Navy lors d'une cérémonie qui s'est déroulée le 29 octobre à la base navale de Norfolk. Construit par les chantiers Huntington Ingalls Industries de Newport News, le bâtiment mesure 114.9 mètres de long et affiche un déplacement de 7800 tonnes en plongée. Capable d'atteindre la vitesse de 34 noeuds, il dispose de 12 tubes pour missiles de croisière Tomahawk et 4 tubes pour le lancement de 26 torpilles Mk48.
Le dernier navire de l'US Navy a avoir porté le nom de California était un croiseur lance-missiles à propulsion nucléaire, le CGN 36, admis au service actif en 1974 et désarmé en 1999.

Ravitaillement en vol simultané pour deux Super Stallion


C'est une vue impressionnante qui a été prise la semaine dernière en Méditerranée, où évolue le groupe amphibie articulé autour du porte-hélicoptères d'assaut USS Bataan. Lors d'un exercice de ravitaillement en vol au dessus de la mer, deux hélicoptères lourds MH-53 E Super Stallion sont venus refaire le plein de carburant auprès d'un avion KC-130J Hercules doté sur chacune de ses ailes d'un système de ravitaillement se connectant aux perches dont sont équipés les hélicoptères.
Pour mémoire, les MH-53E sont des appareils de 33 tonnes mesurant 30 mètres de long et disposent d'un rotor à cinq pales dont le diamètre est de 24 mètres. Conçu pour les missions d'assaut héliporté, ces machines, développées par Sikorsky, peuvent transporter 55 hommes et 5.5 tonnes de matériel. Certains appareils ont, également, été gréés pour le dragage de mines.

Report: US Plans Post-Iraq Buildup in Gulf

The New York Times newspaper reports the United States is negotiating with Kuwait to allow American combat troops to be based in the Persian Gulf area after completing the announced withdrawal from Iraq by the end of this year.

The report says the talks are part of U.S. plans to boost its military presence in the Gulf so the United States is able to respond quickly in the event of a collapse of security in Iraq or a military confrontation with Iran.

The Times says in addition to maintaining a combat presence in Kuwait, the United States is also considering sending more warships through international waters in the region. The size of the potential standby force has not been determined.

There was no immediate confirmation of the Times report, which was based on interviews with unnamed military officials and diplomats.

Navy Awards $1.6 Billion for the Production of Six Poseidon P-8A

The U.S. Navy announced awarded Boeing $1.6 billion contract for the production of six P-8A Poseidon under the Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) phase of the P-8A multi-mission maritime aircraft (MMA) program. This first LRIP contract also includes spares, logistics and training devices. Production of the first LRIP aircraft will begin this summer at Boeing’s Renton, Washington facility. The 737 fuselage and tail sections will be built by Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kan., then transferred to Renton where all structural features will be incorporated in sequence during fabrication and assembly.
