Army helicopter crash in Sudan kills 2 crew

The Associated Press
Friday, June 7, 2013 | 12:13 a.m.

A Sudanese military spokesman says a military training helicopter has crashed in the country's south, killing its two crew members.

Col. Sawarmy Khalid was quoted on Thursday by SUNA, Sudan's official news agency, as saying that the crash was an accident.

Khalid says the helicopter hit a high voltage electricity pole in Damzain in southeastern Sudan. Damzain is the capital of Blue Nile state. No further details were available.

The government in Khartoum has been facing an insurgency in the Blue Nile state and has accused its southern neighbor, South Sudan, of helping rebels there.

MiG-21 crashes near Barmer, pilot ejects safely
Vimal Bhatia, TNN | Jun 8, 2013, 01.42 AM IST

JAISALMER: An Indian Air Force MiG-21 aircraft crashed near Barmer on Friday morning. The pilot, who managed to eject, sustained minor injuries and was admitted to military hospital in Jodhpur.

"The aircraft was airborne from Uttarlai airbase on a routine flying training sortie," said defence spokesman SD Goswami. "Immediately after take-off, the aircraft developed a technical snag in the engine, forcing the pilot to eject at a critical height. The pilot ejected safely. There is no reported damage to any civil property or life. A court of inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the accident."

The rescue team recovered the black box of the crashed aircraft.

Barmer SP Rahul Barhat said the aircraft during its routine exercise took off from Uttarlai air force station in Barmer and after developing a technical snag, it caught fire and exploded. The pilot managed to eject and sustained minor injuries.
The debris have scattered around 2-3km area on the sand dunes in Sodhiyaar village in Chohtan police station. The pilot ejected in Sanawada village under Sadar police station in Barmer.

Three fighter planes crashed this year so far, including the crash on Friday. On February 12 a MiG 27 during its regular sortie crashed near Kumharon ki Dhani under Nagana police station, 20km away from Barmer district.

A tech snag led to the accident and the aircraft crashed near a residential area, which was 3km away from the Mangla oil field.

The debris of the aircraft had spread in a large area. The pilot of the flight ejected on time, but was hurt and is undergoing treatment.

In this crash, two other persons were injured. The air force had ordered a court of inquiry. Similarly on February 19, 2013 a Sukhoi 30 had crashed in the Chandan field firing range in Jaisalmer district in which two pilots ejected safely.

MiG 21 is being retired in a phased manner by 2015-16. Tejas will replace MiG in near future. In the last four and a half years, over 40 fighter jets of IAF have met with accidents and 30 out of these 40 jets belonged to the MiG series. It has become a major concern for the Air Force.

Defence minister AK Antony in his written reply to Lok Sabha also mentioned technical snag as the main reason for these crashes.

Earlier on March 19, 2013, a Su-30 MKI aircraft crashed at Pokharan range, Jaisalmer, while participating in EX-IRON FIST 2013. Both pilots ejected safety over Pokharan range. No civilian was killed or injured in the crash.

IAF has taken various initiatives to ensure aviation safety and conduct analytical studies and quality audits to identify vulnerable areas and institute remedial measures to reduce accidents.

All flying bases have been visited by senior aerospace safety personnel of the IAF to apprise the operating units suitably and get their views to enhance aviation safety. Accident prevention programmes have been revitalized, including steps to train pilots to prevent accidents due to human error which includes increased use of simulators.

Pilot dies in warplane crash in United Arab Emirates

Monday Jun 17, 201309:08 AM GMT

An Emirati military jet has crashed during a routine training mission in the Persian Gulf country, and the pilot has died in the incident.

The United Arab Emirates Armed Forces General Headquarters said in a statement that the aircraft went down on Monday, and aviation authorities are inspecting the scene to investigate the causes of the accident.

In early May, a US-made F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet crashed during a training mission in the United Arab Emirates, but both pilots ejected from the plane safely.

Another warplane operated by the United Arab Emirates air force also crashed during a training mission in July 2011. The pilot died in the incident.

In November 2010, a UAE air force jet crashed in the northern emirate of Ras al-Khaimah. The pilot, who also died in the crash, had been on a training mission when his Hawk aircraft came down.

Nicaragua Air Force Chiefs Killed in Helicopter Crash

Jun. 21, 2013 - 08:00AM

MANAGUA — Senior members of Nicaragua’s air force were killed Thursday when a helicopter they were flying in crashed near Lake Managua, officials said.

Ten people died in the crash, including Air Force Chief of Staff Col. Manuel Lopez, the head of Air Force counterintelligence, Col. Chester Vargas, and air defense chief Lt. Col. Aldo Herrera, the Nicaraguan Army said in a statement.

The MI-17 helicopter went down after visiting the El Papalonal firing range in La Paz Centro, 52 kilometers (32 miles) northwest of Managua, the statement said.

The senior officers killed were mostly former Sandinista guerrillas who helped found Nicaragua’s modern military after the leftist revolutionaries triumphed in 1979 against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza.

The officers were returning to the capital Managua when, soon after departing, the helicopter pilot made an emergency call to warn of unspecified flight difficulties, said army spokesman Col. Orlando Palacios.

Early reports citing witnesses said that the helicopter caught fire and exploded during flight, plunging to earth from a height of some 1,500 meters.

Lower-ranking airmen also died in the crash, the army statement said.

Philippine air force plane crashes, two pilots missing

POSTED: 24 Jun 2013 6:45 PM

The Philippine Air Force said Monday two pilots were missing after their twin-engine propeller plane went down at sea during a night flying mission.

MANILA: The Philippine Air Force said Monday two pilots were missing after their twin-engine propeller plane went down at sea during a night flying mission.

The OV-10 Bronco, used largely as a maritime patrol support aircraft, failed to return to an air strip on the western island of Palawan Sunday night, air force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Okol told AFP.

"Combined elements of the coastguard and the navy have found parts of the debris and it appears to be the rear cargo compartment of the vessel," Okol said.

"We are still holding out hope that the two pilots were able to eject... we are searching for them."

Okol said the pilots had radioed the control tower that they were five nautical miles off the airfield and preparing to land before they crashed.

"At this point, we could not yet speculate as to what exactly happened," he said, adding the weather was clear.

The air force's fleet of 30 Broncos was acquired from the United States in 1991 and Thailand in 2004.

Developed in the 1960s as a counter-insurgency aircraft by the US Air Force, the Broncos can carry heavy ammunition for a few hours in the air.

They are used primarily for close air support missions against insurgents, mainly on the southern island of Mindanao, Okol said.

However, they are also used to monitor the archipelago's extensive coastal areas, as well as for search and rescue missions in the disaster-prone Philippines, he added.

Okol would not say exactly how old the crashed plane was, but insisted that all of the Broncos were in good condition.

"They have received a good number of upgrades, and we maintain them very well," he said.

In May, two pilots were killed when an air force trainer plane crashed north of Manila

In 2010, eight air force personnel and a civilian were killed when a light cargo airplane crashed in the southern city of Cotabato.

Le crash rapporté plus haut par Youma serait dû à une collision/ingestion d'oiseau
Luke Air Force Base officials say early signs indicate a bird strike caused an F-16 jet fighter crash Wednesday.

However, until an investigation is complete, they can’t confirm that was the cause, said James “Rusty” Mitchell, director of the Community Initiatives Team for the 56th Fighter Wing he said on Thursday.

The inquiry could take a month or longer, he added.

Israel grounds warplanes after F16 crashes at sea

JERUSALEM | Sun Jul 7, 2013 4:39pm BST

(Reuters) - An Israeli F16 warlane crashed at sea on Sunday due to an engine malfunction and Israel subsequently grounded all its F15 and F16 combat aircraft pending a review of the incident, a military spokesman said.

The pilot and navigator on board managed to safely bail out of the U.S.-made plane and a military rescue unit came to evacuate them by helicopter, the spokesman and Israeli media reports said.

"An F16 combat aircraft crashed earlier today in the sea after the engine malfunctioned," the spokesman said. He added that the air force commander had decided to "ground all F16 and F15 planes until circumstances of the incident are reviewed."

Israel's Channel 2 television said that the crash occurred off the coast of the Hamas Islamist-ruled Gaza Strip, a territory which also borders on Egypt.

An Air Force trainer jet crashed in Patia, Chittagong on Sunday.

Police said the incident took place at 3:30pm at east Burulia of Baghkhali under the upazila.

Patia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mofizuddin told bdnews24.com that Flight Lieutenant Arafat, the pilot of the A-5 trainer aircraft, was unharmed.

The China-made aircraft took off from the city’s BAF Zahurul Haq Air Base a few minutes before 3:30pm.

Witnesses said it crashed into a paddy field within minutes of takeoff.

Pilot Arafat parachuted down to Bhatikhain in Baghkhali.

“I saw a man descending from the sky onto Kagachi pond. We five people went to his rescue. Then the police came and took him away,” Rubel Bariya of Baghkhali told reporters.

It was raining in the area at the time of the incident causing the aircraft to sink into the mud, witnesses said.

The OC said the pilot lost control of the aircraft due to inclement weather and jumped off with a parachute.

After the incident, a helicopter from the Air Force arrived in Patia College field to take Arafat back to the base.

A team from the Air Force was working to recover the damaged aircraft.
