L’Hipopotam, le nouveau véhicule blindé amphibie polonais

Le char allemand Leopard n’a aucune ressemblance avec le félin dont il porte le nom. Et le Hawkei de Thales est bien loin de faire penser, de par son apparence, au serpent que l’on trouve en Australie. En revanche, l’allure de l’Hipopotam, le nouveau véhicule de transport de troupes amphibie du constructeur polonais AMZ Kutno, a un air du mammifère herbivore semi-aquatique d’Afrique.

Le développement de l’Hipopotam a été lancé après avoir constaté que l’armée polonaise avait des lacunes capacitaires en matière de véhicules amphibie quand le pays fut touché par de nombreuses inondations dévastatrices au cours de ces dernières années.

Avec une masse comprise entre 25 et 30 tonnes pour une longueur de 9,5 m, une largeur de 2,88 m et une hauteur de 2,82m, l’une des difficultés rencontrées au cours de la mise au point de ce véhicule aura été d’assurer sa flottabilité tout en préservant sa grande mobilité. Chose, toutefois, qui a été faite il y a longtemps pour certains chars chenillés, comme le français AMX-30, qui utilisait un schnorchel, ou encore le M-4 Sherman américain.

Présenté au salon de l’armement polonais MSPO 2012 qui se termine ce 6 septembre, l’Hipopotam, avec ses 8 roues motrices, dispose d’un blindage en matériaux composites censés assurer une protection au standard Stanag 4 de l’Otan.

Il est prévu de le doter d’une arme téléopérée de type OBRSM Kobuz ZSMU-1276C1, de lance-grenades et de caméras. Avec une autonomie de 650 km, l’Hipopotam pourra rouler à 100 km/h sur route, grâce à son moteur Deutz d’origine allemande, placé près de son centre de gravité.

Pragmatiques, les concepteurs de ce véhicule ont prévu de se procurer des éléments auprès de fournisseurs étrangers. Outre le moteur, la boîte de vitesse automatique est fournie par la société américaine Allison Transmission et les essieux viennent de Timoney Technologies, établie en Irlande.

Poland Hikes Defense Budget For 2013

The Polish Ministry of Defense will augment its defense program for 2013 with a $40.22 billion budget which is about 6.7 percent higher than 2012.

About 26 percent of the MOD budget will account for the modernisation of the armed forces about 1 billion more than in 2012.

Poland is currently investing in ammunition, aircraft, tanks and repairs of armament and military equipment, building investment, purchase of ammunition, fuel, uniforms, fire-fighting means, medicine and food for mobilisation reserves, as well as Polish contribution to NATO investment programs.

The MoD will continue planning its programs once the Parliament approves the budgetary bill.

Sikorsky, WZL1 To Establish Black Hawk Helicopter MRO In Poland

Sikorsky Aerospace Services and PZL Mielec ( manufacturer of S-70i Black Hawk helicopters in Poland) announced today they have signed a Letter of Intent with Poland’s principal maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) company Wojskowe Zaklady Lotnicze NR 1 S.A. (WZL 1).

The agreement relates to a Polish Government decision to procure up to 26 S-70i multi-role helicopters made in Mielec for the Polish armed forces.SAS is the aftermarket division of Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation. The Letter of Intent also addresses the proposal to establish a regional MRO center in Poland to support other Black Hawk operators.

“As a leading MRO provider with expertise supporting the Polish armed forces, WZL 1 is well established to provide in-country support for the Black Hawk helicopter,” said Frank DiPasquale, SAS Vice President of Sales and Strategic Relationships. “We are also excited that WZL 1 could also serve as a central base for regional support of our Black Hawk fleet. This year, the Polish Ministry of Defence is expected to release a tender for multi-role helicopters followed by a contract award in late 2013. Sikorsky will offer the Polish-built S-70i aircraft, a customizable variant of the Black Hawk helicopter flown by militaries in 25 countries".

“The potential production of S-70i Black Hawk helicopters in Mielec for the Polish Armed Forces brings an opportunity to grow the entire Polish aviation industry,” said Janusz Zakrecki, President of PZL Mielec. “To work with WZL 1 will be a positive move as we seek to expand our network of partners, and develop local suppliers”.

L'armée polonaise voudrait moderniser ses systèmes SAM

le président polonais a soumis au vote du parlement un budget conséquent de 2.5 à 3.7 milliards $ sur une période allant de 2014 à 2023 avec une participation technique probable de la France et de l'Allemagne.
La Pologne dispose actuellement de six bataillons de S-125 Neva (SA-3 Apollo) dont un dispose en plus de S-200 Vega (SA-5 Gammon). Des experts pointent du doigt ce système obsolètes incapables de fournir la protection nécessaire des cieux polonais.

Poland Seeking 70 New Military Helicopters: P.M.

WARSAW — NATO-member Poland is in the market for 70 new military helicopters, more than double the number it first sought in March, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Sept. 26.

“We’re determined to speed up and expand our helicopter plans with the immediate decision to buy 70 helicopters for the Polish army,” the PAP news agency quoted Tusk as saying.

Delivery of the first choppers is expected by 2014, he said, describing the cost of the project as “gigantic” but declining to name a figure.

In March, Warsaw announced a tender to buy 26 multipurpose helicopters for its army worth an estimated 1.5 billion to 3.0 billion zlotys ($480-$960 million).

The move is seen as a significant step in the Polish army’s drive to replace 250 Soviet-era helicopters in the years to come.

A former communist state of 38.2 million, Poland was among the first to join NATO in 1999 and has been a member of the European Union since 2004. The country has two helicopter plants, run by British-Italian AgustaWestland and the U.S. Sikorsky Aircraft, respectively.

Polish media have tipped them as the odds-on favorites in the tender.

AgustaWestland in 2010 bought Polish helicopter producer PZL Swidnik, which makes the Sokol helicopters used in rescue operations, by firefighters and for transport, and above all by the army.

It sells its helicopters in Poland, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

AgustaWestland plans to start producing AW 109, AW 119 and AW 139 helicopters in Swidnik in southern Poland, alongside parts for the AW 101 model.

Sikorsky has started to produce a new version of the Black Hawk S70i for export in the PZL Mielec plant, also in southern Poland Tusk was on Sept. 26 visiting a military exercise range in Drawsko, northwest Poland, where Polish forces are staging their largest annual military exercise, code-named Anakonda 12.

He also announced that Poland’s failed attempt to build its first naval corvette-type vessel — a decade-old project dubbed Gawron and mired in allegations of high-level corruption — will be salvaged by completing the craft as a patrol boat.

Poland Cancels UAV Contract After Delays

The Polish Ministry of Defence has cancelled a contract concluded in 2010 with the Israeli company Aeronautics Defense Systems for the supply of medium-range unmanned aircraft after the company failed to meet deadlines, in spite of their postponement for two years.

ADS won the contract in 2010 under the so-called urgent operational requirement procedure. In addition, two other Israeli companies competed for the tender: Israel Aerospace Industries and Elbit.

Aeronautics Company was to provide two systems, each comprising four aircraft and two ground control stations.

A temporary solution was negotiated by the department at the beginning of last year, according to which the manufacturer would provide its unmanned aircraft in Afghanistan as a leased service. A set of loaned aircraft was to be provided to Polish troops for one year, comprising four aircraft, transmission systems, control and support services.

Currently, ground reconnaissance imagery from unmanned aerial vehicles is provided to Polish troops in Afghanistan by the Americans.
