Indonesia plans to more than double its submarine fleet by 2020, the Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday as the nation began preparations for the construction on three new vessels.
Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Hartind Asrin said the submarines will be a vital component in the defense of Indonesia’s maritime borders.
“[Our] enemies will fear us when we have them; because they are beneath the ocean, invisible,” Hartind said.
The underwater vessels will be constructed with South Korean technology in a joint partnership between domestic shipbuilder PAL and South Korean submarine makers. They will be similar to Malaysia’s “Skorpene” submarine, Hartind said.
“The construction of each submarine is expected to take three years,” Hartind told the Indonesian news portal tempo.co.
Indonesia currently has two diesel-powered German submarines in operation, he said.
The first of these new submarines will be constructed in South Korea, with Indonesian technicians on location.
The remaining submarines will be constructed by state-owned shipbuilder PAL, Hartind said.
The ministry spokesman did not know how much the submarines cost.

Le ministre indonésien de la défense révèle le nombre de F-16 du le second batch
Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro revealed Thursday that the second batch of Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighters offered by the United States would consist of 10 aircraft, breaking his previous silence.
Purnomo said the offer would be discussed with the House of Representatives as the aircraft require huge funds for upgrades.
“We must also report the offer to the Cabinet which makes the final decision,” he said during an Idul Fitri gathering at the ministry.
Earlier on Aug.15, Purnomo revealed the second batch offer, but declined to disclose the numbers involved, while Defense Ministry’s secretary-general Vice Marshal Eris Herryanto said the second batch “would be sufficient to form another squadron”.
Currently, Indonesia has 10 F-16A/B Block 15 fighters with operational capability upgrades (OCU) at the 3rd Squadron at the Iswahjudi Air Force Base in Madiun, East Java. Block 15 represents the oldest model while Block 60 is the most advanced.

Indonesia is holding talks with China to produce C-705 anti-ship missiles on the Indonesian island of Java as part of a bid to become more independent in manufacturing weapons. The deepening defense ties come as tensions brew over territorial disputes in the South China Sea between China and the Association of Southeast Asian nations [ASEAN].
Plans to jointly produce the missiles first emerged this July, and the conversation was continued when Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi visited the Indonesian capital Jakarta last week.
The Defense Ministry has confirmed that a contract for the missile production will be signed between Indonesia and China in March 2013.

يذكر ان العلاقات العسكرية بين اندونيسيا والولايات المتحدة عادت الى أوضاعها الطبيعية عام 2010 عندما استأنف الجيش الأمريكي علاقاته مع القوات الخاصة الاندونيسية.
وقامت الحكومة الاندونيسية مؤخرا بشراء مئة دبابة من المانيا وعشرات المقاتلات النفاثة من طراز (سوخوي) من روسيا وثلاث سفن مشاة بحرية فرعية من كوريا الجنوبية لتحديث اسلحتها ومقاتلاتها.
وتسعى القوات المسلحة الاندونيسية الى تطوير اسلحتها العسكرية تدريجيا مع انتعاش اقتصاد البلاد ووسط ارتفاع الطلب على الكفاءات المهنية للقوات المسلحة.
وكان الرئيس الاندونيسي سوسيلو بامبانج يوديونو رفع ميزانية وزارة الدفاع الى 649ر7 مليار دولار هذا العام معربا عن الامل في ان ترتفع ميزانية الدفاع في العام المقبل الى أكثر من ثمانية مليارات دولار أمريكي.

The new 63 metre long vessel is a cutting edge trimaran design that is considered to be the most advanced naval vessel of its type ever built in South East Asia. It incorporates a radical wave piercing hull form for improved seaworthiness and stability, and has been built from full carbon fibre composite materials, utilising the vacuum infusion process and vinylester resin. This method results in a structure that has increased strength, but also offers the benefits of lower operating, maintenance, and lifecycle costs.
The FMPV has “Stealth” design characteristics, and incorporate features that minimise detection by reducing Radar, Infra-Red, Acoustic and Magnetic signatures. Stealth properties are further improved as there are no reverse-angle bow overhangs to reflect radar signals, as seen on conventional hull forms. Weaponry, including missiles and naval guns, and the ships 11 m high-speed RHIB, are discreetly concealed or shaped to meld into the superstructure profile.
The wide decks on the 63m OPV Trimaran also make it an ideal platform for carrying a helicopter, which extends the effective patrol range and capabilities of the vessel.

Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Wednesday that the government was expecting to procure a dozen submarines to augment Indonesia’s existing fleet by 2024.
Purnomo said that a deal to purchase three of these submarines was signed in December 2011. The submarines are being built in cooperation with South Korea.
He said that the joint-production program will transfer South Korea’s technological knowledge of submarines to Indonesia.
The first submarine will be entirely the product of South Korea while the second will be built together with Indonesian workers. Purnomo expressed hope that Indonesia would have learned enough about submarines to be able to build the third independently.
The submarines will weigh 1,400 tons and be 61.3 meters long. Each will carry up to 40 crew members and have eight tubes for torpedoes and other weapons.
“Based on our calculations, two-thirds of our country is water. We need at least 10 submarines to protect it,” Purnomo said.
In 2024, Indonesia expects to have reached the country’s minimum essential force requirement. Some Rp 150 trillion (US$15.8 billion) will have been spent to pay for the modernization of the nation’s weapons-defense system between 2010 and 2014.
