La production de MiG-29 va augmenter avec la prochaine production de MiG-29K/KUB pour les marines russe et indienne

Image
RAC MiG is boosting production activities to meet increased demand for its MiG-29 series of combat aircraft, with the design bureau also close to completing a series of aircraft carrier-based trials for India.

Following its receipt of major orders to supply the Indian and Russian navies with its MiG-29K deck fighter and MiG-29KUB trainer, MiG's production partners will complete 24 aircraft in 2012, up from 11 last year. A further dramatic increase is expected, however, with chief executive Sergey Korotkov having indicated that the annual rate may have to grow to 36 units to keep up with demand.

MiG says it is on track to complete embarked tests with the MiG-29K/KUB aboard the ex-Russian navy vessel the Admiral Gorshkov, which will soon re-enter Indian use as the INS Vikramaditya.

"The testing flights are to be fulfilled before the ship's handing over to the Indian navy, scheduled for December 2012," MiG announced at the show, with the work including using the carrier's "ski jump" ramp.

The service has already received a first batch of 16 aircraft, and will get the first four examples from a follow-on order for 29 more later this year.

Russia's navy will also later field 24 MiG-29K/KUBs with its lone aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, under a contract signed in February.

While the opportunity to make further sales with the K-series fighter is narrow, Korotkov sees the land-based MiG-29M/M2 as holding great potential. Boasting open-architecture avionics, a new radar and with an expanded range of air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, the type is already being offered to possible customers.

"We are certain that as per its cost-efficiency ratio, the MiG-29M/M2 is capable to compete with any modern fighter," Korotkov says. "Many countries, who initially had declared a fast-track transition to Western weaponry, after complex analysis have corrected their approaches."

Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Missile Successfully Intercept Ballistic Missile Target

Fri, Sep 14, 2012 13:53 CET

Lockheed Martin flight tested the PAC-3 Missile which successfully detected, tracked and intercepted an aerodynamic tactical ballistic missile (TBM) target.

The test included a ripple fire engagement, utilizing two PAC-3 Missiles against a single target. The first interceptor destroyed the target and the second PAC-3 Missile self-destructed as planned.

"We continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of the PAC-3 Missile in tests that duplicate the kinds of operational scenarios our soldiers and our allies may face," said Richard McDaniel, vice president of PAC-3 Missile programs in Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business. "We are constantly improving the PAC-3 Missile, increasing its capabilities and expanding the missile's ability to handle the growing number of potential threats".

The PAC-3 missile defeats advanced tactical ballistic and cruise missiles, and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. As the most technologically advanced missile for the PATRIOT air defense system, PAC-3 significantly increases the PATRIOT system's firepower, allowing 16 PAC-3 Missiles to be loaded in place of just four legacy PATRIOT PAC-2 missiles on the launcher.

MBDA Tests Latest High–Energy Laser Demonstrator

Fri, Sep 14, 2012 12:57 CET

Militaries around the world are turning their attention to laser powered weapons with full force and have begun mass scale production and development of high energy lasers.

MBDA Germany announced Tuesday that it has achieved a power of 40 KW using its high-energy laser demonstrator during a laser firing campaign. The laser power generated by patented beam coupling of fibre lasers was successfully demonstrated for the first time in the world.

In the target tracking and firing tests, MBDA Germany demonstrated performance features such as the burning of mortar shells in just a few seconds. The laser with a power of 40 kW also pierced 40 mm thick steel plates in a few seconds. Target tracking runs that were demonstrated in previous trials were also successfully repeated.

“High-power laser weapons can soon provide an answer to conventional and asymmetric threats in military missions,” explains Peter Heilmeier, Head of Market and Business Development MBDA Germany. “They can contribute greatly to protecting our troops. Laser weapons are characterised by precision at long ranges, minimum operating costs and the avoidance of collateral damage".

In 2012, the U.S Navy announced its plans to induct a 100 kW laser weapon could be used on board a navy ship by 2016 $110 million and has further plans to widen such “directed energy” systems.

In 2011, India announced its plan to indigenously develop futuristic high power laser weapons or directed energy weapons (DEWs). Details of the project are still unclear.

Meanwhile, Russia has begun developing powerful airborne lasers capable of shooting down hostile aircraft and incoming missiles.

In 2011, MBDA Germany became the first company in Europe to achieve a power of 10 kW with a good laser beam quality. The tracking of dynamic objects and the effects on the object were demonstrated over a distance of more than 2,300 m and an altitude difference of 1,000 m in real environmental conditions.

Royal Navy’s Astute Class Attack Submarine to Start Sea Trials

Posted on Sep 14th, 2012

Image
Ambush, the second of the Royal Navy’s Astute Class attack submarine, leaves her builder’s yard to begin sea trials.

In the next few days, the 7,400-tonne submarine will leave the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, where she was built, and sail to Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde in Scotland.

The seven Astute Class boats planned for the Royal Navy are the most advanced and powerful attack submarines Britain has ever sent to sea.

They feature the latest nuclear-powered technology, which means they never need to be refuelled and can circumnavigate the world submerged, manufacturing the crew’s oxygen from seawater as they go.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne said after viewing the submarine, touring the shipyard and meeting the workforce:

“This is my first visit to one of the UK’s most advanced defence industries, and I am hugely impressed with what I have seen at Barrow-in-Furness. Ambush is a very sophisticated and potent vessel and I look forward to her departure from the shipyard here for the sea trials that will prepare her for her planned entry into service with the Royal Navy next year.

“Ambush and her sisters are the most powerful and advanced attack submarines ever ordered for the Royal Navy; they are needed by the fleet and they will play a vital role in the future defence of the UK.

“The completion of Ambush is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of the thousands of people employed in this country’s world-class submarine industry.”

The Astute Class is quieter than older submarines and has the ability to operate covertly and remain undetected in almost all circumstances despite being 50 per cent bigger than the Royal Navy’s current Trafalgar Class submarines.

The boat’s Commanding Officer, Commander Peter Green, said:

“We are grateful to all the people who have worked hard to construct this vessel. The crew cannot wait to start sea trials and take this magnificent vessel a step closer to beginning operations.

“It is now time to start putting Ambush through her paces on sea trials and prove that this amazing piece of equipment is ready for operations.”

South Africa: KND Lands Design Contract for New 14m Interceptor

Posted on Sep 14th, 2012

Image
KND has been awarded a design contract for a new 14m Interceptor.

KND has taken a deep plunge, not just designing a remarkable new Interceptor, but also moved away from the traditional way of placing transverse and longitudinal frames.

KND’s new method will increase the fairness of the topside and hull bottom plates. All this adds up to creating less resistance in the water.
Fitted with 3 x 300Hp engines, the anticipated speed will be in the region of 55 knots. Provision has been made for Ballistic protection, three gun mounts and ample locker space. Soon KND will start the development of an inboard version with MSA surface drives so as to reach speeds of 65+ knots.

ILA 2012: Upgraded CH-53GA to begin official certification shortly
By Gareth Jennings
9/14/2012

Official certification of the VFW-Sikorsky CH-53GA Stallion medium/heavy-lift helicopter is expected to take place later in the month, following the official handover of the first of 40 such aircraft to the German Army at the ILA Airshow in Berlin on 12 September.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Eurocopter programme manager Stefan Emig said that certification of the upgraded helicopter will now be carried out by the Bundeswehr Technical Centre 61, the Air Force Weapon System Command and the Army Aviation School.

Following a successful certification, the type will be formally inducted into army service within the next five to six months, he said. Already, the first three aircraft have flown more than 100 hours of operational test flights over the past month, and the first three crews have been trained (the first helicopter to be formally handed over to the Bundeswehr was actually the third to be upgraded).

Official delivery of the first helicopter back to the German military marks the formal beginning of the delivery phase of the upgrade contract that was signed with Eurocopter in 2007.
