The Chinese Navy appears to be developing a brand new type of guided-missile destroyer (DDG) and could be producing several hulls simultaneously, a development that could further tip the balance of power in the Taiwan Strait.
Images have emerged on Chinese military Web sites in recent weeks that seem to confirm the long-rumored development of the Type 052D destroyer, which some analysts are comparing to Aegis-equipped destroyers in the US Navy. More recently, two hulls were pictured at China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Jiangnan Changxing shipyard near Shanghai earlier this month. The first “dock launch” occurred yesterday.
According to China military watchers, as many as 10 Type 052D DDGs could be under construction. If true, this would be a departure from past practice for Chinese shipbuilders, which usually develop one or two hulls and launch a series of tests before entering mass production. Analysts have speculated that Chinese engineers may have become confident enough in the subsystems used on the new destroyer to risk accelerated development.
At 160m long and 18m wide, the Type 052D is slightly larger than its predecessor, the Type 052C, and is believed to weigh just over 6,000 tonnes. Reports indicate the vessel will use a Type 346 Active Phased Array Radar System and a Type 518 L-band long-range radar.
Meanwhile, the main 100mm gun on the Type 052C, which has reportedly been unreliable, appears to have been replaced by a new PJ-38 130mm gun. The vessel also comes with a helicopter-landing platform and close-in weapon systems.
According to China Military News, the new destroyer comes with two 32-unit vertical launch systems capable of launching HQ-9B air-defense missiles, anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles. The original YJ-62 missile launchers used on the Type 052C do not appear to be present on the new DDG. It has been speculated that the Type 052D could be equipped with a navalized version of the DH-10 land-attack cruise missile.
Defense analysts believe the Type 052D could enter service in 2014.

In related developments, China’s first aircraft carrier, the retrofitted ex-Varyag, left Dalian Port in Liaoning Province yesterday and embarked on its 10th sea trial yesterday. The carrier, which has yet to be christened but is likely to be named after a Chinese province, is expected to enter service later this year.

Image
Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie (left) and Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony (right) walk Sept. 4 after a meeting in New Delhi. Joint military exercises between India and China will be resumed after a four-year gap, Antony announced after the talks.

Image
China's first aircraft carrier will be named "Liaoning" after the northeast province where it was refitted, an expert and military insider said Monday.

And the carrier's hull number, "16," has been painted on the bow, suggesting it would soon be put into service, Li Jie, a researcher with the China Navy Military Academy added.

The carrier, formerly the Ukrainian vessel Varyag, is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year as all the necessary facilities have been installed and the carrier has passed all its 10 sea trials since last August, Li said.

China to obtain 55 Mi-171E transport helicopters

By: Greg Waldron Singapore
07:22 3 Sep 2012
Source: Image

China will obtain 55 Mil Mi-171E transport helicopters as it seeks to further bolster its tactical airlift capabilities. According to an industry source, Russian state export firm Rosoboronexport signed the deal with Beijing in July.

The aircraft will be produced at the Ulan-Ude Aviation factory, located in the southern Russian province of Buryatia.

The source confirmed reports about the deal, under which China will obtain the helicopters at $10-12 million per example. This values the deal at between $550 million and $660 million.

Image

Despite efforts to bolster its helicopter fleet, the tactical airlift capabilities of the People's Liberation Army are seen as lagging behind those of Western powers. The lack of vertical lift transport is a major shortcoming in disaster relief operations, such as during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The Mi-171E, which can carry up to 37 passengers, is an export variant of the Mi-8/17 family.

The PLA NAVY J-11B fighters receive/BS
14.09.2012

A source in the Chinese aviation industry told to Kanwa, in 2011, the first batch of marine fighter aircraft J-11B/BS went up 8-th Marine Division of the PLA NAVY aviation. All these fighters are equipped with engines of Taihang of own production. This is the first batch of J-11B fighters/BS, who joined the naval aviation. According to the same source, in 2011, another batch of these fighters had received 37-th Division of the air force. Future fighter aircraft J-11B will be equipped with engines/BS Taihang, only the first instalment and J-11B, which now stand at arms had the Russian AL-31F engines. To date, the greatest difficulty related to the supply of aircraft engines and components that have not kept pace with the rate of production of J-11B. According to the production plan, the maximum annual production of J-11B/BS-24 fighter that enough to arm one Regiment. Therefore, the air force and Navy are a heated debate regarding the distribution of new J-11B/BS.

In accordance with exclusive photos, Kanwa distribution of J-11B/BS between the air force and Navy was in equal proportions, i.e. on 8-12 fighters. This means that the air force and naval aviation will take at least two years to upgrade one Regiment (which gradually was in Brigade).

According to the source, the J-11B are radars with mechanically operated antenna, and in future to fighter aircraft J-11/16/15 is the planned RADAR from AFAR. The source added that in CHINA for more than eight years developing radars with Afar, its price will be low, and even weight below Russian analogues. Radar for fighter aircraft J-10B is passive. Thus confirms the assumption that Kanwa RADAR J-10B fighter is a copy of the Russian radars with the headlights. These observations are confirmed from other sources. Most recently, at the Beijing Museum of aviation was opened exhibition hall dedicated to the on-board electronics and it clearly says that the J-10B is equipped with a passive PHASED array radars.
