China successfully launched another two satellites into space for its indigenous global navigation and positioning network at 3:10 a.m. Beijing time on Wednesday.

They were the 14th and 15th satellites for the Beidou, or Compass, system. The satellites, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province, were boosted by a Long March-3B carrier rocket.

Since it started to provide services on a trial basis on Dec. 27, 2011, the Beidou system has been stable and its services have been increased and improved, said a spokesman for the China Satellite Navigation Office.

The system has been used in transportation, weather forecasting, marine fisheries, forestry, telecommunications, hydrological monitoring and mapping, according to the spokesman.

China started to build up its own satellite navigation system to break its dependence on the U.S. Global Positioning System in 2000.

Between October 2000 and May 2003, the country set up a regional satellite navigation system after launching three Beidou geostationary satellites.

Beidou-1 can not meet growing demand, so China decided to set up a more functional Beidou-2 regional and global navigation system, Qi Faren, former chief designer for Shenzhou spaceships, said in an interview in 2011.

From April 2007 to April this year, China launched another 13 orbiters to form its Beidou-2 system, which will eventually consist of 35 satellites.

Three Beidou satellites were sent into space early this year. The 11th satellite was boosted by a Long March-3C carrier rocket on Feb. 25, while the 12th and 13th were sent by a Long March-3B carrier on April 30.

The network will provide satellite navigation, time and short message services for Asia-Pacific regions within 2012 and global services by 2020.

IN FOCUS: China takes leap in naval aviation with aircraft carrier

By: Greg Waldron Singapore

Chinese naval aviation took an important step on 25 September, with the delivery of the first aircraft carrier to the People's Liberation Army Navy, although fixed-wing aircraft flight tests have yet to commence.

Formerly the Soviet carrier Varyag, the short take-off but arrested recovery (STOBAR) warship was officially named Liaoning, according to a story by Chinese state news agency Xinhua posted on the Chinese defence ministry website.

The delivery ceremony took place in the northern port of Dalian and was overseen by president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao. Prior to commencing sea trials in 2011, the ship spent six years in Dalian undergoing refurbishment by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.

The Xinhua story stated that the carrier will be used for training and "scientific research". This is consistent with experts' view on the ship's role, which has been the source of much speculation in recent years.

Though an impressive warship in its own right, the Liaoning suffers from several limitations. Her sister ship, the Russian flat-top Admiral Kuznetsov, is only capable of carrying approximately 40 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, while the US Navy's Nimitz-class carriers can carry up to 90 aircraft.

Moreover, STOBAR carriers are only capable of launching fighter aircraft owing to the power required for a ramp-assisted take-off. Though ramps are cheap and easy to maintain, the launching aircraft have to use a great deal of fuel, limiting their payload and range potential. Ramp launches also need significant deck space and only one aircraft can take off at a time.

The Liaoning will be capable of carrying integrated airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system aircraft in the form of the Changhe Z-8AEW, a Chinese derivative of the Aerospatiale Super Frelon. AEW&C helicopters, however, are inferior to fixed-wing AEW&C aircraft such as the Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye, which operates from the catapult assisted take-off barrier arrested recovery carriers operated by the US and French navies.

One industry expert refers to the Liaoning as a "self-licking ice cream cone", in which the carrier's air wing is only capable of protecting itself and the immediate area around the ship. Another says that aside from training pilots and sailors for yet-to-be-built Chinese carriers, the vessel would be useful for deploying an air cover umbrella several hundred miles from China's coastline, offering fighter protection for land-based maritime patrol and AEW&C aircraft.

The development status of China's first carrier-borne fighter, the Shenyang J-15 (a copy of the Sukhoi Su-33), is uncertain. Chinese media sources failed to indicate when flight tests will commence aboard the Liaoning.

VIDEO: China’s SVU200 completes autonomous flight tests

By: Greg Waldron Singapore

China's Sunward Tech SVU200 unmanned helicopter has successfully completed its first autonomous flight tests.

The helicopter's first full autonomous flight occurred on 4 September near the Chinese city of Changsha, says Dennis Fetters, owner of Fetters Aerospace. Fetters is an American rotorcraft developer who designed the SVU200 for Sunward.

During the SVU200's first autonomous flight, the helicopter completed an auto take-off, hovered and flew sideways and backwards before landing exactly where it took off.

On 5 September, the SVU200 transited a 2.1nm (4km) course, navigating with waypoints and landing back at its starting position. It successfully completed a 2.7nm autonomous flight shortly after.

Dennis Fetters

"This event marked a turning point in the project, where the SVU200 transformed from a large helicopter flying under "human-stabilised remote-control" to a fully self-stabilised and self-controlled GPS-navigating autonomous flying vehicle," says Fetters. The SVU200's rotor head and control system provides "super-stable" control that requires one-tenth of the computer-stabilising control inputs required by other large unmanned helicopters, he adds.

The aircraft has two payload bays, one in the nose and one in the rear. It also has hardpoints and can haul sling loads. It can be mounted with an external payload pod or external fuel tanks.

The SVU200 is powered by a Rotax 582 engine. Fetters says this uses a special exhaust system that enables engine power to increase from its normal 65hp (48.5kW) to 78hp. This feature allows the design to lift a maximum useful load of 200kg (441lb), or to achieve a top speed of 113kt (209km/h).

C'est la version navale du J-10A et il ne semble pas y avoir de modification particulière par rapport a cette version mis a part sûrement une crosse d'appontage et un train renforcé.
