Posted by David Cenciotti in Drones, Iran.
According to the Ettelaat newspaper published on Nov. 8, 2012, the “first vertical takeoff drone in the world” with the name of Koker 1 (Koker is the name of a beautiful bird) was successfully flight-tested and about to be officially unveiled next month at island of Kish.
The tilt-wing unmanned aircraft is equipped with four noise-reduced engines and reportedly features some ultra-advanced technology as multidirectional radars, long-range optics, satellite communication devices, radar evasive devices.
It will be capable of travelling in day and night with 3 hours of continuous flight time up to 170 Km radius up to 12,000 ft, and will also be solar powered.
The drone is developed by the research team of Saman communication group from the state of Mazandaran which previously developed the “Likoo” drone.
Koker 1 will be displayed in the air show scheduled for Dec. 11-14 at Kish Island.
Obviously, it is not the first VTOL drone in the world. Nor is it the only tilt-wing robot being tested or operated: NASA and other less famous companies have been developing unmanned aircraft with tilting wings since some years.
On Oct. 14 Iran announced new combat drone capable of carrying missiles for air defense missions whereas in September, Tehran unveiled the new “Shahed 129″ a new UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) largely based on the Israeli Hermes 450 model.

WASHINGTON | Fri Dec 7, 2012 6:17pm EST
(Reuters) - An internal report for the U.S. Congress has concluded that Iran probably is no longer on track, if it ever was, to having an ocean-crossing missile as soon as 2015.
The study casts doubt on a view long held by U.S. intelligence agencies that Iran could be able to test-fly by 2015 an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, if it receives "sufficient foreign assistance."
"It is increasingly uncertain whether Iran will be able to achieve an ICBM capability by 2015," said the report by the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, which works exclusively for lawmakers.
Iran does not appear to be receiving as much help as would likely be necessary, notably from China or Russia, to reach that goal, according to the 66-page report dated Thursday.
It is also increasingly tough for Tehran to obtain certain critical components and materials because of international sanctions related to its disputed nuclear program.
In addition, Iran has not demonstrated the kind of flight test program generally deemed necessary to produce an ICBM, said the study by Steven Hildreth, a specialist in missile defense who consulted seven external expert reviewers.
The study appears to be the most detailed unclassified look yet at Iran's controversial ballistic missile and space programs. It does not address Tehran's nuclear program, which has prompted international fears that it could lead to atomic weapons at short notice.
An effective nuclear-weapons capability requires three things to work together - enough fissile material, a reliable weapons device and an effective delivery system, such as a ballistic missile that can grow out of a space launch program.
Iran's efforts to develop, test and field ballistic missiles and build a space launch capability have helped drive billions of dollars of U.S. ballistic missile defense spending, further destabilized the Middle East and contributed to Israel's push for pre-emptive action.
Iranian missile threats have also prompted a U.S. drive for an increasingly capable shield for Europe, largely built by contractors such as Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing Co, Raytheon Co and Northrop Grumman Corp.
ASSESSING THE ICBM THREAT
The U.S. intelligence community since 1999 has stuck to the conditional 2015 date, provided Iran gets enough outside help, for a potential Iranian ICBM capable of reaching the United States, which is at least 10,000 kilometers away.
An ICBM is generally defined as having a range greater than 5,500 km (3,400 miles). Such missiles from Iran could threaten targets throughout Europe and the Middle East.
"With sufficient foreign assistance, Iran may be technically capable of flight-testing an intercontinental ballistic missile by 2015," the Defense Department told Congress in its 2012 annual report on Iranian military power.
Michael Birmingham, a spokesman for the office of the Director of National Intelligence, which leads the 17 organizations which comprise the U.S. intelligence community, said views among spy agencies vary on the Iranian ICBM outlook.
He added that the 2015 date cited by the Defense Department was "heavily caveated."
Iran appears to have a significant space launch effort, not merely a disguised cover for ICBM development, the Congressional Research Service report said.
Iran became the ninth country to demonstrate an indigenous space launch capability on February 2, 2009, when it launched an Omid satellite from a Safir 2 rocket.
Iran has stated it plans to use future launchers to put intelligence-gathering satellites in orbit, a capability that is a decade or so in the future.
Tom Collina, research director of the private Arms Control Association, a Washington-based advocacy group, said the report suggests the United States could respond in a more "measured" way to a potential Iranian long-range missile threat.
"We do not have to deploy missile defenses on the East Coast by 2015, as some in Congress want, nor do we have to rush missile defenses into Europe, which makes Russia nervous," he said.

If Iran has decoded all data in the captured U.S. stealth RQ-170 drone it’s no big deal
In the last of a series of similar claims, a senior Iranian commander announced that Tehran has just extracted all the data stored in the RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone which was captured last year.
“All the intelligence existing in this drone has been completely decoded and extracted and we know each and every step it has taken (during its missions),” Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir
Ali Hajizadeh said, according to the FARS News Agency.
Although it is possible that the batwing’s internal memories were not completely wiped out following the loss of satellite link with the ground control station in spite of the automatic erase that should start as a consequence of the loss of control procedure to prevent data from being recovered, it’s hard to believe something really interesting was still stored on the Sentinel when it was recovered.
Most probably, pre-planned waypoints, routes, other navigation stuff, along with some radio communication setting to establish satellite links with the remote control station: something quite “interesting” to understand the procedures used by the U.S. to spy on Iran, to guess the preferred routes, the operating altitudes, but nothing really crucial, especially if we consider that, unlike the X-47B, the RQ-170 is no longer the American cutting edge robot tech.
On the other side, as already explained, the circuitry, lenses, memories and sensors that survived the crash landing might have been evaluated, tested, copied and, possibly, improved with the help of Russia and China.Noteworthy, he went on to say: “The US President (Barack Obama) had told the Israeli officials that the drone was tasked with spying on Iran’s nuclear program, but our experts found after decoding the drone that it had not performed even a single nuclear mission over Iran.”

Wed, Dec 12, 2012 10:54 CET
During the 6th annual International Aviation Industry Exhibition underway on Kish island in the Persian Gulf, Iran showcased two domestically-produced helicopters.
The two semi-heavy and mid-size military choppers, Panha-1 and Panha-2, were unveiled by Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi.
“Panha-1 mid-size chopper with the capacity to carry 14 passengers, and 8-seater Panha-2 light chopper were among the other products unveiled today,” Fars News Agency reported.
Their main task is to provide logistical support for the armed forces and to take part in military missions, according to the report. Iran has also unveiled Shahriyar, a medium-lift 214ST chopper that can carry up to 20 passengers.
According to Managing-Director of the Iranian Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO) Manouchehr Manteqi, Iran is ready to export the choppers which to be unveiled in the exhibition.
He also said his organization has also started designing another chopper which will be built by the next year. “We are planning to build 100- and 150-seat aircraft, not to mention our capabilities in designing drones,” Manteqi, who is also a deputy defense minister, was quoted as saying by Press TV.

The Iranian Air Force has surprised the U.S. military with the interception of a Predator unmanned aerial vehicle, a report said.
The Washington Institute for Near East Policy asserted that the interception of the U.S. Air Force MQ-1 Predator demonstrated the effectiveness of Iranian combat pilots. In a report, the institute said two Russian-origin Su-25 fighter-jets, which do not contain radar, succeeded in detecting and tracking the Predator.
(...) “All in all, the intercept over the Gulf demonstrated competent pilot and controller skills and effective collaboration,” the report, titled “Iran Threatens Aerial Freedom of Navigation in the Gulf,” said.
The report, authored by analysts Eddie Boxx, Michael Eisenstadt, and Michael Knights, disputed long-held U.S. military assessments that the Iranian Air Force could not engage Western aircraft. The institute said the Iranian pilots were guided by controllers to within firing range of the Predator.
