Iran tests battle tactics in strategic Strait of Hormuz

The naval force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps holds drills to test new equipment, navy's combat-readiness, speed in responding to natural disasters and familiarity with new weapons, Iranian media reports.

DUBAI - The naval force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has held exercises to test new equipment and battle tactics in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

The drills tested the IRGC naval force's combat-readiness, speed in responding to natural disasters and familiarity with new weapons, the Fars news agency reported.

They were the fifth such tactical exercises held by the force and took place near Bandar Abbas, a Gulf port on Iran's southern coast, Fars said. It did not say when they took place.

Iran's regular navy, separate from the IRGC's naval branch, held drills in the Gulf in late December and early January meant to showcase the country's military capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports passes.

Iranian officials have often said Iran could block the strait if it came under military attack over its disputed nuclear program, and a heavy Western naval presence in the Gulf is meant to deter any such move.

Iran unveils third generation fighter jets

Iranian Defense Minister will soon unveil the third generation of Iranian fighter jets, defense ministry official said.
Image
Azarakhsh fighter jet
Reports quoted Ahmad Vahidi as saying; "a new fighter jet to be unveiled soon, is designed as a bomber and performs both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It is fully engineered by Islamic Republic of Iran's scientists and is considered a very important achievement for Iran."

This will be the third generation of Iranian fighter jets unveiled by Iranian defense ministry since the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Previously, Iran Defense industry had revealed "Azarakhsh" and "Saeqeh" for first and second generation of fighter jets respectively.

When Saeqeh fighter jet was unveiled, it had a big exposure in the military aviation industry press. Like its competitor fighter "F18", Saeqeh has two canted vertical tails.

This new fighter jet, whose name has not been announced yet, has been designed for a new integrated avionics, coupled with new LCD monitors and intelligent flight helmets, which give pilot and co-pilot far more maneuverability time.

Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) fighter jet
The first flight test for Saeqeh was in 2004, and it was delivered to Iran Air Force in 2007.

Iranian defense industries had introduced "Tondar," a fighter jet for the training fighter pilots before.

In the military world, designing and manufacturing a fighter jet is one of most important steps of science and technology in defense and military production and Iran, with unveiling the third generation of its fighter jets, has taken big steps in manufacturing of fighter jets.

Iran launches Ya Zahra (and Mersad) air defense system production line.

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has inaugurated the production line of an indigenous short-range air defense system called Ya Zahra.

“This defense system has the capability of detecting, tracking and destroying short-range aerial targets such as aircraft, helicopters and drones,” Vahidi said on Sunday.

“Other features of the system include the capability of simultaneously engaging and destroying several targets, high operational speed and fully automatic tracking,” the Iranian defense minister added.

Vahidi added that the mobile missile system can be connected to the country’s defense network and deployed in any location.

Iran tested the Ya Zahra missile system during a massive seven-day maneuver, codenamed Modafe'an-e Aseman-e Velayat 4 (Defenders of the Velayat Skies 4), in November 2012.

Vahidi also pointed to the mass-production of the Mersad air defense system, saying, “Mersad surface-to-air missile system is an efficient and advanced medium-range air defense system which can carry out defense operations against various kinds of high-speed aircraft, helicopters, drone and cruise missiles.”

Vahidi said the system had managed to successfully destroy aerial targets in the Modafe'an-e Aseman-e Velayat 4 drills.

''The Iranian Air Defence Industries Group of the Aerospace Industries Organisation Ya-zahra Project has succeeded in developing a reverse-engineered R440 missile version of the then French Thomson-CSF Airsys (now Thales France) Crotale system, parts of which were stated to have been captured from Iraq during the 1980 to 1988 Iran/Iraq War. It is also believed that, as Iran has a number of Chinese-supplied FM-80 (Chinese Feimeng-80 - Flying Midge-80) systems and, possibly, follow-on FM-90 systems. Technology derived from those systems may have been used in the Ya-zahra Project.''

Iran's Bio-Capsule Comes Back from Space

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran announced on Tuesday that it has sent a monkey into the space on the back of Pishgam (Pioneer) explorer rocket and that it has brought back and recovered the living cargo.

Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said his ministry's Aerospace Industries Organization sent the living creature into space aboard an indigenous bio-capsule as a prelude to sending humans into space.

The Aerospace Industries Organization said the capsule was sent to an orbit beyond 120km in altitude and carried out telemetry of the environmental data records.

The explorer rocket was launched by the Aerospace Industries Organization and it returned to the Earth after reaching the desired speed and altitude, and the living creature (monkey) was retrieved and found alive.

In mid-March 2011, Iran's Space Agency (ISA) announced the launch of the Kavoshgar-4 rocket carrying a test capsule designed to house the monkey.

The capsule had been unveiled in February 2011 by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, along with four new prototypes of home-built satellites.

At the time, Director of Iran Space Agency (ISA) Hamid Fazeli called the launch of a large animal into space as the first step towards sending a man into space, which Tehran says is scheduled for 2020.

Iran has already sent small animals into space - a rat, turtles and worms - aboard a capsule carried by its Kavoshgar-3 rocket in 2010.

The Islamic republic, which first put a satellite into orbit in 2009, has outlined an ambitious space program and has, thus far, made giant progress in the field despite western sanctions and pressures against its advancement.

Iran has taken wide strides in aerospace. The country sent the first biocapsule of living creatures into space in February 2011, using its home-made Kavoshgar-3 (Explorer-3) carrier.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced in 2010 that Iran plans to send astronauts into space in 2024. But, later he said that the issue had gone under a second study at a cabinet meeting and that the cabinet had decided to implement the plan in 2019, five years earlier than the date envisaged in the original plan.

Omid (hope) was Iran's first research satellite that was designed for gathering information and testing equipment. After orbiting for three months, Omid successfully completed its mission without any problem. It completed more than 700 orbits over seven weeks and reentered the Earth's atmosphere on April 25, 2009.

After launching Omid, Tehran unveiled three new satellites called Tolou, Mesbah II and Navid, respectively. Iran has also unveiled its latest achievements in designing and producing satellite carriers.

A new generation of home-made satellites and a new satellite carrier called Simorgh (Phoenix) were among the latest achievements unveiled by Iran's aerospace industries.

The milk-bottle shaped rocket is equipped to carry a 60-kilogram (132-pound) satellite 500 kilometers (310 miles) into orbit.

The 27-meter (90 foot) tall multi-stage rocket weighs 85 tons and its liquid fuel propulsion system has a thrust of up to 143 tons.

Iran is one of the 24 founding members of the United Nations' Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), which was set up in 1959.

Voila une F-35 Made in Iran :affraid:,c'est le ''Qaher 313''
Iran unveils new indigenous stealth fighter “Qaher 313″. And here’s a detailed analysis.

February 2, 2013

On Feb. 1, 2013, Iran unveiled its indigenous fighter jet named “Qaher 313″.
Image
The prototype of the Q-313 (or F-313 according to the stencils applied to the aircraft), was presented to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and publicly displayed as part of the Ten-Day Dawn ceremonies held in Iran to celebrate the 1979′s victory of the Islamic Revolution.

In the previous days, the Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi had said, “The aircraft will be different from the other fighter jets Iran has already made.”
Image
Indeed, based on the first photographs released by the FARS News Agency, the new stealthy jet has a really peculiar design. It features hard edges and those distinctive edges and angle of the U.S. F-22 and the twin tail shape much similar to that of the F-35 Lightning II.
Image
The Q-313 has large, seemingly fixed canards, and little wings whose external section is canted downward.

The canopy material is at least odd (based on its transparency, it looks like plexiglass or something like that).

The cockpit seems to be basic (a bit too much for a modern plane – note the lack of wirings behind the front panel).
Image
The air intakes are extremely small whereas the engine section lacks any kind of nozzle.
Image

Image
And, above all, the aircraft is way to small.

Look at the following image showing an Iranian officer sitting on the ejection seat in the cockpit.
Image
It looks like this pilot is in a miniature plane.
Image
Summing up: the shape is interesting with some innovative features but the Q-313 displayed on Feb. 1, 2013, seems to be nothing more than a large mock up model (not properly sized to accomodate a real pilot….).

Update

There is a video allegedly showing the Q-313 in the air. Here it is.
Even if it is not the first flight of the aircraft as some of The Aviationist readers say, the way the depicted plane flies is suspect. It seems a radio-controlled scale model more than a modern fighter jet.

Furthermore, as someone pointed out: if the Qaher 313 actually flew, most probably Tehran would release footage of its takeoff and landing.
